In a March 25, 2020 interview with Monochrome, Hamilton CEO Sylvain Dolla described a brand built around American design and heritage, supported by Swiss watchmaking and Swatch Group resources. He discussed the Hamilton PSR, mechanical-watch development, connected technology and the company’s retail strategy. His figures and comments describe Hamilton at that time—not its current policies or performance.
What was the interview about?
Watch journalist Xavier Markl interviewed Dolla for Monochrome on March 25, 2020. Markl framed Hamilton as a competitor in the accessible-luxury segment and noted that Dolla had been CEO since 2011. Dolla’s answer to what distinguished the brand centered on design: Hamilton drew on its American history and character while using Swiss production and movement capabilities.

Why did Hamilton make the PSR?
Dolla presented the Hamilton PSR as a contemporary tribute to the Pulsar, Hamilton’s early digital-watch milestone. The PSR’s digital display made it a different expression of the brand from the mechanical watches that accounted for most of Hamilton’s turnover, according to Dolla. The idea had been in development for about two years before the interview, Dolla said. He credited cooperation within Swatch Group: Hamilton worked with Asulab and EM Microelectronic on the display. His account illustrates how the company could draw on group expertise to revisit a historic product concept.
What did Dolla say about mechanical watches and movement development?
Dolla said mechanical watches represented more than 80% of Hamilton’s turnover in 2020. He also said the brand had introduced 16 movements over the preceding seven to eight years. These are figures he gave in the interview; they were not independently audited in the cited account and should not be read as current statistics.

He described several strands of development:
- Hamilton was introducing Nivachron hairsprings for the H-10 three-hand movement.
- Chronographs were using silicon hairsprings.
- Newer Valjoux-based chronographs combined a silicon hairspring with increased power reserve.
- Dolla said Hamilton had asked ETA for a Valjoux movement with enough reserve to keep a watch running through a weekend.
He linked this work to Hamilton’s late-1960s automatic-chronograph history as well as to collaboration across Swatch Group. The interview describes the company’s development priorities at the time; it does not provide a model-by-model technical comparison or a buyer’s guide.
What was Hamilton’s position on connected watches?
Dolla emphasized durable products and mechanical movements as Hamilton’s focus. He did not rule out connected functions categorically: his answer left open the possibility of connected technology in a durable fine watch. It is therefore more accurate to describe his position as focused on the brand’s existing strengths than as a promise never to make a connected watch.

How did Hamilton distribute its watches in 2020?
Dolla described an omnichannel approach, combining retail partners and online sales. The figures below are the numbers he reported in the 2020 interview, not present-day counts.

Dolla also said e-commerce sales continued as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted retail markets and that the company was revising its growth expectations and adapting its activities. Those remarks describe the early-pandemic situation in March 2020, not a current forecast.

What is the later leadership context?
A 2022 interview identifies Vivian Stauffer as Hamilton’s CEO and says he was appointed in July 2020. It also discusses the brand’s Lancaster, Pennsylvania origins, its 1974 acquisition by SSIH and its eventual move to Bienne. Why did Hamilton’s film history come up?
Hamilton’s American heritage also has a screen history. In a 2019 corporate article, Swatch Group said Hamilton watches had appeared in more than 500 movies since 1932, citing the brand’s screen debut in Shanghai Express, the Ventura’s appearances in Blue Hawaii and Men in Black, and a custom watch made for Interstellar that fans call the Murph.
