Bitcoin’s Second Golden Cross: What the 50- and 100-Day EMA Crosses Mean

Decrypt reported that Bitcoin’s 50-day EMA crossed above its 200-day EMA, followed by the 100-day EMA. Here’s why the second cross is called stronger—and why it does not predict what comes next.

Decrypt reported on October 5, 2026, that Bitcoin’s 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) had crossed above its 200-day EMA in mid-September, followed by the 100-day EMA crossing above the 200-day EMA. The second cross is described as “stronger” because the 100-day average responds more slowly to price changes—but neither crossover predicts what Bitcoin will do next.

What the reported Bitcoin golden crosses are

A golden cross is a chart pattern in which a faster moving average rises above a slower one. Decrypt’s October 5, 2026 article reported two such crossings in Bitcoin’s EMAs:

  • The 50-day EMA crossed above the 200-day EMA.
  • Later, the 100-day EMA crossed above the 200-day EMA.

An EMA gives more weight to recent prices than older prices. The 50-day average reacts faster than the 100-day average, while both are compared with the slower 200-day average. Decrypt characterized the first pair as the classic golden cross and the later 100/200-day cross as a second, stronger signal. That is the article’s technical interpretation, not an independently reproduced chart finding here. Read Decrypt’s October 5, 2026 report.

Why the second cross is called stronger

Because the 100-day EMA moves more slowly than the 50-day EMA, it generally takes a more sustained change in prices to move it above the 200-day EMA. Decrypt’s interpretation is that having both shorter averages above the 200-day average makes the chart configuration more compelling than the 50/200-day cross alone. “Stronger” describes that configuration; it does not establish a higher probability of future gains or a particular return.

Does a golden cross predict Bitcoin’s price?

No reliable forecast follows from the crossover by itself. As Decrypt’s Jose Antonio Lanz wrote, “The catch: EMAs lag, so a golden cross confirms a move that has already happened rather than predicting the next one.” By the time a faster average rises above a slower one, the price movement that lifted it may already be underway or may have ended.

The reported crossings therefore offer a way to describe recent price trends, not a target price, timetable, or assurance of continued gains. No verified historical hit rate or performance statistic for this specific Bitcoin setup is established in the cited coverage. The SEC also cautions that past performance does not necessarily predict future results. SEC Investor Bulletin: Performance Claims.

What Bitcoin investors should keep in mind

A chart pattern is only one piece of information, and a bullish label does not make an investment safe. The SEC describes Bitcoin and Ether as highly speculative and urges investors to consider their price volatility, including when exposure is through an exchange-traded product. That is general risk guidance, not an assessment of this particular EMA crossover. SEC guidance on ETPs providing exposure to Bitcoin and Ether.

Decrypt reported the moving-average configuration; the report alone does not establish that the crossovers will continue to hold or that Bitcoin’s price will rise. Treat the signal as a backward-looking chart observation rather than a standalone reason to buy or sell.
