TIAA Discloses Data Breach Exposing Social Security Numbers: What Happened

The 2023 PBI/MOVEit incident involved a TIAA vendor, not an established breach of TIAA’s systems. Here’s what the employee notice says and what affected readers can do.

A 2023 incident involving TIAA vendor Pension Benefit Information (PBI) and file-transfer software MOVEit exposed personal information described in an employee notice, including Social Security numbers. The available filing ties the exposure to PBI—not to a breach of TIAA’s own systems—and says the exact information involved could vary by person.

What happened?

In a filing dated July 26, 2023, Peninsula College said TIAA notified it that employee personal information was involved in an incident involving PBI, a TIAA vendor, and MOVEit Transfer. PBI handled personal data used in beneficiary processes, including matching records against death notices and obituaries. The filing described a third-party incident; it did not establish that TIAA’s own systems were breached. Washington State Office of the Attorney General filing, July 26, 2023.

At the time of its filing, the college said it did not know how many employees were affected. The available record does not establish a reliable total for the number of people affected by the PBI incident.

What information was involved?

The employee notice attached to the filing listed first and last name, address, date of birth, gender, and Social Security number among the information exposed. The broader filing cautioned that the college could not determine exactly what information was taken for each person. The list therefore describes categories that may have been involved; it does not mean every affected person had every field exposed. Were TIAA systems breached?

The available documents attribute the 2023 incident to PBI and MOVEit Transfer; they do not say that attackers breached TIAA.org. In a participant letter dated November 2024, TIAA said alerts that data had been made available online might relate to the earlier PBI incident and that such alerts did not mean TIAA.org had been breached. TIAA also said participants affected by the earlier incident had been notified and offered two years of complimentary identity monitoring. TIAA participant letter, November 2024.

An online-data alert by itself does not establish when or how data was exposed, or prove that a new intrusion occurred. The available information also does not establish that every later alert was connected to PBI.

How the 2023 vendor incident differs from a separate 2025 account-access event

A Maryland filing describes a separate incident in which someone accessed one resident’s TIAA online account using information from a source other than TIAA. It is not the 2023 PBI/MOVEit exposure.

What can you do?

If you received a notice about the PBI incident

  • Use your incident-specific mailed letter to confirm whether you are eligible for monitoring and to follow its enrollment instructions. The attached employee notice described a no-cost 24-month service and directed impacted employees to the unique code and instructions in their letter; it does not establish a universal current deadline or enrollment route.
  • If you are unsure whether a notice is genuine, contact TIAA or the organization named in it through contact details you obtain independently, rather than using links or phone numbers in an unexpected message.

Protect your accounts and identity

  • Use a unique, strong password for each financial account and enable strong authentication. TIAA recommends passkeys where available and one-time passcodes.
  • Be cautious with messages that pressure you to click a link, disclose credentials, or provide a verification code. A breach notice can make follow-up phishing more convincing.
  • Keep your contact information current with financial institutions so you can receive account alerts, and review account activity and statements for transactions you do not recognize.
  • Monitor your credit reports and ask Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion about placing a no-cost fraud alert or credit freeze. A freeze can restrict access to your credit file for many new-credit applications; contact the bureaus about how to place or lift one.

These steps reflect guidance in TIAA’s November 2024 participant letter. A separate offer described in a 2025 individual account-access notice applies to that distinct event and does not establish a currently available or universal PBI-related monitoring offer.
