The IRS has postponed certain federal tax deadlines to September 30, 2027, for taxpayers affected by events in Israel. Notice 2026-63 applies to specified acts originally due from September 30, 2026, through August 31, 2027, and carries forward some earlier postponed acts for taxpayers who meet the applicable notice’s eligibility rules. It is not a blanket extension for everyone, and it does not automatically give every eligible taxpayer more time to pay.
What the IRS extended—and for whom
On September 30, 2026, the IRS announced that Notice 2026-63 postpones certain federal tax deadlines until September 30, 2027. The postponement applies to eligible taxpayers’ specified acts with due dates on or after September 30, 2026, and before September 30, 2027. The IRS describes the relief as applying to eligible returns and payments; the notice also covers other time-sensitive tax acts.
This is a federal tax procedure measure, not a change in tax rates or a new benefit available to all taxpayers. The IRS’s September 30, 2026 announcement summarizes the relief, while the notice sets out its operative terms.

For an eligible taxpayer, the postponement generally moves a covered act due from September 30, 2026, through August 31, 2027, to September 30, 2027. Notice 2026-63 includes, among other acts:
- Filing certain income, estate, gift, generation-skipping transfer, excise (other than firearms tax), harbor maintenance, and employment tax returns.
- Paying those taxes or installments.
- Making qualified retirement-plan contributions.
- Filing a Tax Court petition.
- Filing a tax credit or refund claim, or bringing suit on a refund claim.
The list is expressly not exhaustive. The notice points to applicable regulations and Revenue Procedure 2018-58 for the full scope of postponed acts. It also postpones certain government actions affecting eligible taxpayers, including assessing tax, issuing certain notices or demands, collecting tax, bringing suit to collect tax, and allowing a credit or refund.

How the 2027 notice interacts with earlier relief
The IRS’s Israel-related relief is set out across four notices: Notice 2023-71, Notice 2024-72, Notice 2025-53, and Notice 2026-63. They address different periods, and eligibility under one does not automatically establish eligibility under the next.
| Notice | Period or role described by the IRS | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Notice 2023-71 | Addressed the October 7, 2023 attacks. | Eligibility for relief under this notice is distinct from eligibility under later notices. |
| Notice 2024-72 | Covered the 2023–2024 period. | Relief depends on the notice’s applicable terms. |
| Notice 2025-53 | Provided relief through September 30, 2026, for affected acts due during its period. | A taxpayer eligible under this notice but not Notice 2026-63 had until September 30, 2026, to complete acts postponed by Notice 2025-53. |
| Notice 2026-63 | Covers eligible acts due September 30, 2026, through before September 30, 2027. | Certain earlier postponed acts are carried forward to September 30, 2027, only for taxpayers who qualify under the applicable earlier notices. |
The IRS announcement describes the relationship among these notices; consult Notice 2026-63 and the relevant earlier notice to determine which deadline applies to a particular act.

Postponement is not a general filing extension
Notice 2026-63 explicitly states: “The postponement period provided in this notice is not the same as an extension of time to file a tax return.” A routine filing extension is governed by return-specific rules, and an extension to file does not extend the time to pay. Late payment may result in interest or penalties. Determine separately whether the notice postpones your particular act and whether a separate filing extension applies.
