The two stocks named in the October 6, 2026, Motley Fool article are Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) and Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY). The author frames Medtronic as a value-and-income idea and Lilly as a growth idea, arguing that healthcare demand may hold up when inflation pressures household budgets. That is an investment thesis—not proof either stock is an inflation hedge or will outperform.
What does “Trumpflation” mean in this stock argument?
The Motley Fool article by Reuben Gregg Brewer points to high energy prices amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East and says inflation could persist or worsen before improving. Its broader premise is that people are less able to postpone medical care than many other purchases, so healthcare companies may have more resilient demand.
The article does not quantify energy’s contribution to inflation, supply current CPI or PCE readings, or show how healthcare stocks performed in past inflation episodes. Its headline’s appeal to “history” should therefore be read as the author’s framing, not as a demonstrated historical performance record for these two stocks. A less discretionary category of spending does not ensure that a company’s margins, share price, or valuation will be protected from inflation.
Why Medtronic is presented as the value-and-income idea
Medtronic is a large medical-device maker that the article describes as out of favor and undergoing a turnaround. Brewer says management has refocused on higher-growth, more profitable businesses and exited other divisions. New products, including the Hugo surgical robot, are cited as contributors to sales growth.

The article reports 8.4% sales growth in fiscal 2026 and nearly 14% sales growth in fiscal 2027’s first quarter. It also reports a 3.3% dividend yield and 49 consecutive years of dividend increases. These are figures reported by The Motley Fool in 2026, not independently verified here against Medtronic filings; yield can change with the share price and dividend rate.
For valuation, the article says Medtronic’s price-to-sales and price-to-earnings ratios are below their respective five-year averages, but provides no date-specific ratios. That relative comparison is the author’s report, not a current valuation measurement. The central question for an investor is whether the company can sustain its product growth and turnaround—not simply whether the stock is below its own historical multiples.

Why Eli Lilly is presented as the growth idea
The Motley Fool article describes Lilly as a leader in GLP-1 weight-loss medicines and points to strong demand. It argues the company could benefit as oral pills become more prominent, while using cash from weight-loss medicines to expand its pipeline, including through acquisitions.

The growth case comes with concentration and product-life risks. A large contribution from a limited group of medicines makes results more exposed to shifts in demand, competition, and the ability to replenish the pipeline. Patents also provide time-limited protection, so today’s drug economics cannot be assumed to last indefinitely. Oral formulations and acquisitions may expand the business, but the article does not establish their future financial contribution.

The reported yields are not a like-for-like measure of overall investment return, and they should not be treated as current quotes. Before making a decision, check each company’s latest filings and market data for its dividend, payout, operating performance, and valuation.

Are either of these stocks a dependable inflation hedge?
The case is plausible only in a limited sense: medical needs may be less discretionary than some consumer spending. But a resilient end market is not the same thing as a protected stock. Higher costs, interest rates, competition, regulation, execution problems, or a change in investor expectations can affect earnings and share prices. A high or changing valuation can matter even if demand remains strong.
The article does not provide a historical study demonstrating that MDT or LLY outperformed during inflation, nor does it compare them with other defensive investments. Treat “place to hide” as a headline metaphor and the two names as ideas to evaluate, not as a guarantee, recommendation tailored to an individual, or substitute for diversification.
