The county says the report was broader than the information requested, which concerned 12 employees, and that Crum sent it without opening or reading it. County boards were scheduled to begin considering a removal process at an October 6 public hearing, but the available sources do not confirm what happened at or after that hearing. Boone County’s August 7 announcement is the source for the disclosure account; the removal question remains unsettled.
What happened in the Boone County data disclosure?
In an August 7, 2026 announcement, Boone County described a sequence that began with the Indiana Department of Child Services’ annual audit of the county’s financial records. DCS began the audit in May and sought documentation concerning employees whose work involved child-support services. After an initial report did not include the requested information, a DCS employee identified 12 employees whose records were needed.
According to the county’s investigation, Auditor Debbie Crum then asked Human Resources for a report of all county employees enrolled in its long-term disability plan. The request did not include the context or purpose, the county said. HR placed the report on the county’s secured network drive. The county says Crum retrieved it and emailed it to two DCS employees on June 30 without opening or reading it first.
The report contained names and Social Security numbers for all 290 employees enrolled in the plan, rather than information limited to the 12 employees identified by DCS. Approximately three weeks later, a DCS employee forwarded the email to four Boone County employees and two county vendors. The county said it did not know why the email was forwarded; officials discovered the disclosure after that forwarding. These details are the county’s account of its investigation, not an independently established finding in a court proceeding.

How many employees were affected, and what did the county do?
The county said the report exposed the names and Social Security numbers of 290 employees enrolled in its long-term disability plan. Its announcement said affected employees had been notified and the county was providing resources including credit monitoring and identity-protection services. It did not name a service provider or describe a public enrollment offer.
The county also said it was implementing additional safeguards for handling and transmitting sensitive employee information. Commission President Tim Beyer said, “County employees have every right to expect that their personal information will be handled with care, accuracy and accountability, and shared only when necessary.”

Why is Boone County considering removing its auditor?
Pre-hearing reporting described county officials as considering a removal process, but accounts of the stated basis were not identical. The Indianapolis Star, in a September 24 report republished by AOL, said county spokesperson Brent Wheat expected allegations and evidence to be presented at the hearing and that the county would not discuss specifics beforehand. The same report said Crum’s lawyer, Kevin Koons, told the newspaper the only reason orally provided to Crum was the release of employee information to DCS.
A September 21 Current Publishing report said Crum’s lawyers understood the Indiana code cited in the process to concern physical presence in the office. Those reports do not establish that the data disclosure was the only ground under consideration or that office attendance was the formally established ground.

Crum’s position, as quoted by the Indianapolis Star from a statement she gave the Lebanon Reporter, was: “I did not knowingly disclose anyone’s Social Security number, and I do not believe this single mistake is a lawful basis to remove me from office.” She also said, “I have continued to do the job the voters of Boone County elected me to do, and I look forward to the Oct. 6 hearing so the full facts can be heard in public.” These are Crum’s statements, not legal findings.

The Indianapolis Star’s pre-hearing account summarized Indiana law as allowing removal on specified grounds that include charging illegal fees, refusing or neglecting duties, inability to perform duties, or failing to be physically present in the office for a reasonable amount of time each month. That is a news report’s summary of the statute, not legal advice or a court ruling on Crum’s case.

According to that report, a 10-day waiting period preceded the scheduled hearing, and removal would require possible resolutions by both the county commissioners and county council. If a resolution passed, a court petition could follow. The public notice reproduced by NoticeRegistry said the October 6 hearing would initiate proceedings under IC 36-2-8.7 and IC 5-8-1-35, hear public comment, and take no vote at that hearing. Attorney Ted Nolting, identified by Current Publishing as a member of Crum’s legal team, called the procedure “a very, very rare procedure.” That is his characterization, not a verified frequency statistic.

Was Debbie Crum removed, and what happened at the October 6 hearing?
The reviewed pre-hearing reports and reproduced notice do not establish whether the October 6, 2026 hearing took place as scheduled, was continued, what evidence or testimony was presented, or whether either board voted or a court filing followed. They therefore do not confirm that Crum was removed. An official post-hearing record is needed before reporting an outcome.
