YouTube does not publish a hard limit on how long a single live stream can run. This ambiguity creates confusion for creators planning 24/7 broadcasts, marathon streams, or continuous loops. Can your stream run for one day, one week, or indefinitely? The answer is more nuanced than a single number.
The Official Policy (What YouTube Says)
YouTube’s official documentation states that live streams can run for up to 12 hours continuously. After 12 hours, the stream ends, and if you want to continue, you must start a new broadcast.
However, this is inconsistently enforced. Some channels report streams running 18 hours, 24 hours, or longer without being cut off. Others hit the 12-hour limit precisely. The actual behavior depends on your channel’s history, verification status, and whether you are streaming from a certified application.
Testing Real Duration: What Happens in Practice
The practical limits are:
Unverified accounts: 12-hour limit is enforced. The stream ends automatically after 12 hours, and you must manually start a new one.

Verified YouTube channels (phone-verified accounts): Up to 24 hours, sometimes longer. Some channels report 48-hour streams without interruption.
Monetized channels (YouTube Partner Program): Up to 12-24 hours before the system either cuts off the stream or degrades the broadcast quality as a soft limit to encourage breaks.
Channels streaming via certified encoders or OBS Studio (well-maintained): Up to 18-24 hours commonly reported, though this varies.
The variation exists because YouTube does not publicly document the exact threshold. It changes based on your account status, the volume of content you are streaming, and backend load on YouTube’s infrastructure.

What Happens When a Stream Reaches 12+ Hours
If your stream approaches or exceeds the 12-hour window, one of these occurs:
Automatic termination: YouTube stops the broadcast and converts it to a VOD (video on demand) on your channel. Viewers see a message that the live stream has ended. You are then able to start a new stream.
Soft limit degradation: Your stream stays live but quality degrades—bitrate drops, latency increases, or the stream becomes unstable. This is a signal to wrap up and restart.
No interruption: Your stream simply continues. This is rare and usually reported on high-reputation channels with strong streaming infrastructure.

The most reliable behavior is to assume a 12-hour effective limit and plan your stream architecture accordingly.
Staying Live Beyond 12 Hours: Restart Strategy
For 24/7 channels or long-form broadcasts, the solution is a planned restart. After 12 hours, deliberately end the stream and start a new one. This takes 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on your setup.
Keep Prerecorded YouTube Streams Live Beyond 12 Hours
StreamNeo lets you upload an owned or licensed prerecorded video and paste a YouTube stream key to set up an always-on YouTube Live broadcast.
The stream runs in the cloud while your PC stays off, so the broadcast does not depend on leaving a desktop or encoder running overnight.
Stream health is checked every 30 seconds, and dropped streams restart automatically, which suits channels where unattended continuity matters.
Start with the free 24-hour 720p/30fps trial with no card at signup to verify the workflow before committing to a longer-running broadcast.
To implement this:
Automate the restart: Use OBS’s built-in “Automatic Scene Switcher” or a third-party script to stop the current stream and start a new one at 11.5 hours (before the limit is reached). Create a “Restart” scene with a brief holding graphic, switch to it, stop the stream, wait 30 seconds, and start the new stream.
Manual restart: Set a reminder to restart every 12 hours. This is fine for daytime streams but impractical if you stream at night and no one is awake to restart it.

- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Change your broadcast model: Instead of a single long stream, run multiple shorter streams and concatenate the VODs afterward into a single playlist. Viewers perceive continuous content even though the backend is a series of 6-hour or 8-hour segments.
Why 12 Hours: YouTube’s Engineering Reasons
The 12-hour limit likely reflects YouTube’s ingestion pipeline design. Live streams are stored in temporary buffers designed to hold 12-24 hours of video data. Beyond that, YouTube needs to flush the buffer and restart the pipeline to avoid running out of memory or disk space.
This is not a policy limit (YouTube could change it at any time), but an infrastructure limit. As YouTube’s systems evolve, the limit may increase or disappear entirely, but currently 12 hours is the safe assumption for backwards compatibility.
Practical Duration Limits by Use Case
Music or ambient loops (24/7 radio, sleep sounds, lo-fi beats): A 1-2 hour video looped continuously has a different limit than a single 12-hour-long file. If you are looping a video, the limit is not on how many times you can loop it, but on the duration of your current broadcast session (the 12-hour rule applies). However, once the broadcast ends and you start a new stream, you can loop the same video again. This effectively allows 24/7 streaming if you restart every 12 hours.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLive commentary or interactive streams (podcasts, gaming, educational): Humans need breaks. A 12-hour limit is usually acceptable because continuous streaming of live content for more than 12 hours is exhausting for the host and viewer retention drops after 6 hours anyway.
Automated loops (weather, news tickers, time-lapse): These streams should be designed to restart every 6-12 hours automatically. A cron job, Task Scheduler, or cloud automation should restart the broadcast programmatically every 11 hours.
24/7 streaming (the common goal): You will need an automated restart strategy or a cloud streaming service that handles restarts transparently.
Stream Stability Issues That Mimic Duration Limits
Beyond the 12-hour cutoff, other factors can end a stream earlier:

Encoder crashes: OBS, FFmpeg, or your streaming software freezes or crashes. If no one is monitoring, the stream stays dead until restarted. This can happen at any time, not just after 12 hours.
Internet interruption: Your connection drops for more than a few seconds. YouTube marks the stream as ended or degraded. Automatic recovery is not guaranteed; you may need to restart manually.
Account suspension or moderation: If YouTube’s systems flag your stream for violating policies, the broadcast is cut off regardless of duration.
Rate limiting: If you restart the stream too many times in a short window (e.g., restarting every 5 minutes), YouTube may temporarily restrict your ability to broadcast.
Bit rate degradation: As your stream approaches resource limits, YouTube may reduce your allowed bitrate. If you cannot maintain the lower bitrate, the stream becomes unstable.
The 12-hour hard limit is just one failure mode. Reliable 24/7 streaming requires monitoring and redundancy.
StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and restarts a dropped prerecorded YouTube Live stream automatically, so unattended recovery is built into the cloud workflow while your PC stays off.
For a prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo handles the unattended monitoring side from the cloud while your PC stays off. It checks stream health every 30 seconds and restarts a dropped stream automatically, helping address interruptions that would otherwise require manual recovery.

How Cloud Streaming Solves This
The 12-hour limit becomes irrelevant with cloud streaming. Services like StreamNeo upload your video once and stream it around the clock from their infrastructure. The stream is not subject to YouTube’s session duration limits because the stream is not a “session” in the traditional sense—it is a continuous loop managed by a remote server.
StreamNeo uploads a video, loops it indefinitely, and monitors the connection. If the stream interrupts, it restarts automatically. The upload persists, so you do not have to restart every 12 hours. Your personal computer powers off, eliminating the need for monitoring or manual intervention.
This is particularly valuable for 24/7 music channels, sleep sound loops, or any content that repeats. You upload once, set it to loop, and walk away. The stream stays live for weeks or months without interruption or human attention.
Practical Workarounds for the 12-Hour Limit
Pre-schedule a new broadcast: Go to YouTube Studio, click “Create” > “Go Live,” and schedule a new broadcast to start at 11.5 hours after your current one began. YouTube will automatically transition to the new stream if the previous one is still running.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use OBS + Script automation: Write a script that monitors your stream uptime and automatically restarts it when approaching 12 hours. This is free but requires some technical setup.
Bundle shorter streams: Instead of fighting the 12-hour limit, accept it and design your broadcast as six 2-hour streams or four 3-hour streams per day. Viewers watch the continuous playlist and do not notice the behind-the-scenes restarts.
Archive and loop: Record your daily streams as VODs, then use a cloud streaming service to loop them continuously. This separates the live broadcast from the 24/7 playback, and you get the best of both worlds.
The Bottom Line
YouTube’s 12-hour live stream limit is a real constraint, but it is not a hard wall. Verified channels sometimes exceed it. Restarting every 11-12 hours is a reliable workaround. For 24/7 streaming, automation or cloud streaming is essential because manual restarts are impractical.
Recommended Free Tools
If you are planning a channel that streams continuously, plan for the limit: either automate restarts, use a cloud service, or accept periodic interruptions as part of your broadcast model. The 12-hour limit is not a barrier; it is just a parameter your architecture needs to account for.
Most successful 24/7 channels do not fight YouTube’s limits. They work within them. StreamNeo eliminates the need to think about duration limits because the service loops your video indefinitely without restarting. You upload once, paste your stream key, and the broadcast runs for weeks with no intervention. There is a free 24-hour trial with no card required, which is long enough to confirm that the stream stays live beyond 12 hours without interruption and that your analytics track the viewers correctly.
