When was Indira Ekadashi 2026?
Indira Ekadashi fell on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in the cited Indian calendars. The Ekadashi tithi in the 2026 ISKCON Jaipur calendar began at 2:09 a.m. IST on October 6 and ended at 12:36 a.m. IST on October 7. The tithi therefore crossed midnight, but the fasting date selected from it was October 6.
For New Delhi, SanatanBodh listed parana from 6:17 to 8:38 a.m. IST on October 7. The event and that parana morning have passed. SanatanBodh’s 2026 calendar details and the ISKCON Jaipur calendar give India-specific references.
Why do dates and timings differ by city or calendar?
Ekadashi is determined by tithi, a lunar day, while the observance date and parana window also depend on panchang rules and local sunrise. A tithi can begin on one civil date and end on another, so its interval should not be mistaken for the fasting date.

The difference is visible in the published calculations: Drik Panchang’s Washington, D.C. page gives a local tithi interval from 4:37 p.m. October 5 to 3:04 p.m. October 6, and a parana window of 7:10–9:28 a.m. on October 7. Those are local Washington times, not replacements for the New Delhi or Jaipur times. Smarta and Vaishnava observance rules can also affect which date is followed. Check a panchang for your city and tradition rather than applying an Indian time universally.
Month names can differ as well. Indira Ekadashi falls in Ashwina Krishna Paksha in the Purnimanta convention, and is called Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha in the Amanta convention. The name variation reflects different month-counting conventions.

What is the parana time, and what does it mean?
Parana is the breaking of the Ekadashi fast on Dwadashi, the following lunar day. The New Delhi window published by SanatanBodh was 6:17–8:38 a.m. IST on October 7, 2026. It is a city-specific parana window, not a universal shubh muhurat.
Drik Panchang explains that parana is generally after sunrise on the next day, within Dwadashi, and after Hari Vasara—the first quarter of Dwadashi. If Dwadashi ends before sunrise, the applicable rules differ; morning is the preferred period when it is available. Consult the local calendar for the precise window and any tradition-specific calculation. Drik Panchang’s Indira Ekadashi page explains its location-based timings and parana rules.

How is Indira Ekadashi observed?
Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and observe a fast according to their health, capacity, and family or devotional practice. The sources describe different levels of fasting rather than one rule for everyone: some devotees avoid grains, rice, wheat, and lentils, while other practices may involve fruit or a stricter fast. Do not undertake a waterless fast if it is unsuitable for your health.
One 2026 temple-calendar description includes Vishnu worship and chanting alongside its stated food restrictions. SanatanBodh describes worship with tulsi and a lamp and notes that fasting customs vary. These are examples of practice, not a single mandatory checklist. A lamp is an optional puja item; the cited material does not establish a required type or design.

What is the connection to Pitru Paksha and ancestors?
Indira Ekadashi occurs during Pitru Paksha, a period associated with honoring ancestors. In the traditional King Indrasena story, the king observes the fast and dedicates its merit to his father. This is a devotional narrative, not a historical account.
Indira Ekadashi vrat and Ekadashi Shraddha are related to the same tithi but are not interchangeable obligations. Drik Panchang describes Ekadashi Shraddha as a tithi-specific rite for a deceased person whose death occurred on Ekadashi. That description does not mean every family must perform Shraddha on Indira Ekadashi. For family rites, follow the relevant tradition and local guidance. Drik Panchang’s Ekadashi Shraddha guidance explains the tithi-specific context.
