For most individual federal tax returns, the IRS says an e-filed refund typically takes about three weeks; a mailed return takes six weeks or more. Choosing direct deposit is the fastest payment route, but neither filing nor payment method guarantees a particular date. Check Where’s My Refund? for your return’s status and personalized refund date.
How long does an IRS refund usually take?
The IRS’s typical estimates depend on how you file:
| Return method | Typical IRS estimate | When status is generally available in Where’s My Refund? |
|---|---|---|
| E-file | About three weeks | 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return; three days after e-filing a prior-year return |
| Mail a paper return | Six weeks or more | Four weeks after filing on paper |
These are general estimates, not guarantees. The IRS says it issues most refunds in less than 21 days, but errors or additional review can extend an individual return’s processing time. The IRS’s 2026 Tax Tip 2026-33, published April 21, 2026, gives that general statistic; it does not promise that every refund will arrive within 21 days.
After the return is processed and approved, the tracker provides a personalized refund date. The date funds become available can also depend on the financial institution’s posting time.

Who gets paid fastest?
E-filers generally get a quicker start
The IRS’s typical estimate is shorter for an e-filed return than for one mailed on paper. E-filing also makes status information available sooner: generally after 24 hours for a current-year return, compared with four weeks after a paper filing. Those status-check windows are when information is generally available, not a promise that the refund will be issued by then.
Direct deposit is the fastest payment method
The IRS describes direct deposit as faster and more secure than a paper check. In its January 28, 2026 release, the agency said: “Direct deposit remains the fastest and most secure method to receive a refund.” Direct deposit does not bypass return processing or a review hold.

IRS guidance lists bank and credit-union accounts, payment apps, prepaid debit cards, digital wallets, and IRAs as possible electronic destinations when the taxpayer provides the required account and routing details. The IRS says paper refund checks are being phased out; check the current IRS payment guidance for the latest policy and any exceptions rather than assuming a paper check will be available.
Why might a refund take longer than expected?
Several issues can delay processing or delivery:
- Errors or missing information: A math mistake, missing signature, or other incomplete information may require correction or review.
- Additional review: The IRS may need more time to examine a return. If it needs information from you, it will contact you by letter; follow the notice’s response instructions.
- EITC or ACTC claims: By law, the IRS cannot issue a refund claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The hold applies to the entire refund, not just the amount associated with those credits.
- Missing direct-deposit details: Incomplete or missing account information can affect electronic payment.
- An amended return or injured spouse relief: These situations may take longer than a typical original return.
- Bank processing: After the IRS sends a refund, a bank or other financial institution may need additional time to post it. Weekends and holidays can affect when money appears in an account.
EITC and ACTC timing: a 2026 example
For the 2026 filing season, the IRS said most early filers claiming EITC or ACTC could expect refunds by March 2, 2026, if they filed online, chose direct deposit, submitted a complete and accurate return, and needed no additional review. That date was specific to the 2026 season and those conditions; it is not a standing deadline for later filing seasons.

How to check your refund status
Use the IRS’s free Where’s My Refund? tool for an individual federal income tax return. Have these details ready:
- Your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
- Your filing status
- Your expected refund amount, entered in whole dollars
The tracker shows one of three stages:
- Return Received: The IRS has received the return and is processing it.
- Refund Approved: The IRS has approved the refund and provides an expected date.
- Refund Sent: The IRS has sent the refund. Your financial institution may still need time to post the funds.
The tracker generally updates once a day, usually overnight, so checking repeatedly during the day is unlikely to show new information. If the IRS needs more information, respond to its letter using the instructions in the notice.

What to do if the refund is late
- Check the tracker at the appropriate time. Wait until the general availability window for your filing method: 24 hours after current-year e-filing, three days after prior-year e-filing, or four weeks after mailing a return.
- Read the status and any IRS notice carefully. If the IRS asks for information, use the notice’s response instructions.
- Allow for payment posting. If the tracker says the refund was sent, check with your bank or payment provider about posting, including possible weekend or holiday delays.
- Check current IRS guidance for payment questions. Payment rules and exceptions can change, particularly as paper checks are phased out.
Can a tax service make the IRS send a refund faster?
The timing described here is controlled by the IRS’s processing and payment steps. The IRS’s typical estimates do not establish that hiring a tax preparer or using a paid filing service will make the agency process a return faster. Choose filing help for the assistance you need in preparing an accurate return, not as a promise of a quicker IRS refund.
