LiveMint reported on 5 October 2026 that Asian Paints, Kansai Nerolac and Berger Paints were down 15.5%, 25.01% and 14.34% year to date, respectively. Those reported falls may prompt a fresh valuation check, but they do not establish that any share is cheap or that buying before Diwali will pay off. The same report described soft demand, dealer inventory above normal levels and pressure on margins, alongside expectations for revenue growth. The decision turns on valuation and whether consumer demand—not just dealer stocking—recovers.
What do the reported declines actually show?
The percentages below are the year-to-date declines reported by LiveMint on 5 October 2026. The article passage does not provide enough methodological detail to confirm the exact start and end dates or whether the figures use adjusted prices. They should be treated as reported market snapshots, not independently verified returns.

These figures do not support the headline claim that the stocks were down “up to 27%.” A decline can reflect lower expectations, weaker near-term earnings or other risks; it is not, by itself, evidence of undervaluation. To judge whether a price is attractive, compare a dated share price with a consistent earnings measure and assess what recovery investors already expect. The available figures do not establish a comparable valuation ranking among the three companies.
Is Diwali demand improving, or are dealers just stocking up?
LiveMint’s 5 October account of Elara Securities’ channel checks described soft demand through the quarter, a weak August and some September improvement as dealers began stocking premium paints ahead of the festive season. It also reported estimated dealer inventory of 2.5–3 months, against a normal 1.5–2 months. Dealers had reduced purchases in August, and secondary sales had yet to show a meaningful improvement.

This distinction matters for investors: paint shipped to a dealer is not necessarily paint sold to a consumer. Pre-festival orders can lift a company’s reported sales for a period, but high channel inventory may also postpone new orders if retailers first need to sell through existing stock. A stronger signal would be sustained consumer sell-through alongside inventory moving back toward normal, rather than a single burst of dealer restocking.
What was forecast for Q2 FY27?
The figures below are Elara Securities’ estimates as reported by LiveMint on 5 October 2026, not reported Q2 results or company guidance. Q2 FY27 refers to the quarter in each company’s fiscal year; Asian Paints identifies its financial year as running from 1 April to 31 March.

Revenue growth can outpace volume growth when prices rise or the product mix shifts toward higher-priced goods. That is why the industry revenue estimate does not, on its own, prove that underlying demand is strong. Investors should compare subsequent reported volumes, prices and sales to consumers with these estimates.
How could competition and input costs affect profits?
Competition and product mix
LiveMint’s 5 October report said competition was elevated in July and August, with some moderation in Birla Opus dealer schemes during September, according to the channel checks it attributed to Elara. The report also said Elara viewed Asian Paints’ Neo Bharat as having a lower landed dealer price than regular distemper, potentially reversing some Q1 mix gains. These are brokerage and channel observations, not independently verified market-share findings. The available account does not establish comparable audited market-share data for the three companies.

Crude-linked costs and margin estimates
LiveMint reported on 5 October 2026 that Brent crude rose from around $70 a barrel in early July to nearly $97 by the end of September 2026. Crude is a volatile input-cost indicator, not a fixed forecast of paint-company costs. The report said earlier price increases could provide some cushion, while Elara expected the following year-on-year Q2 FY27 EBITDA margin changes:

These are Elara estimates reported by LiveMint on 5 October 2026, not actual outcomes. The same account said Elara expected margins to improve in Q3 with growth and mix; that, too, is a forecast. For an investor, the key test is whether companies’ reported results show that pricing and product mix are offsetting cost pressure without harming volume or requiring heavier discounting.

How should investors compare the three shares?
A useful comparison asks whether the price compensates for the risks and whether the evidence of recovery is durable. The available report provides selected forecasts and channel observations, but it does not settle valuation, future earnings or which share is the best value.
- Check valuation against normalized earnings and cash generation. Use a dated share price and a consistent earnings basis, and ask whether the valuation already assumes a demand and margin recovery. A ranking cannot be responsibly inferred from the reported percentage declines.
- Test demand quality. Separate consumer sell-through and volume growth from dealer shipments, price increases and revenue growth. Give more weight to sustained sales and inventory normalization than to a seasonal stocking increase.
- Assess competitive pressure. Look for evidence in company results and disclosures about discounting, dealer schemes, product mix and market share. The channel observations reported by LiveMint are not a like-for-like market-share comparison.
- Track margins and costs. Compare reported margins with the dated brokerage estimates, and assess whether pricing and mix offset input-cost pressure without weakening sales quality.
- Look beyond the festival quarter. Check whether sell-through holds up and dealer inventories normalize after the festive period. One quarter of pre-festival stocking does not establish a lasting recovery.
Use company filings for reported financial outcomes and management statements, keeping them separate from brokerage forecasts. Asian Paints’ investor materials identify its financial year as 1 April to 31 March; Kansai Nerolac’s financial-information materials list its FY2026 annual report and results. These sources are routes to primary documents, but the information available here does not reconcile every relevant Q1 FY27 line item across all three companies. A Business Standard summary gives Kansai Nerolac Q1 FY2026–27 revenue of ₹2,373.59 crore, operating profit of ₹328.37 crore and net profit of ₹228.41 crore; verify those secondary-source figures against the company or exchange filing before relying on them.

So, is it time to buy paints stocks ahead of Diwali?
A share-price fall can justify renewed analysis, but the LiveMint-reported declines do not amount to a buy signal. The outlook described on 5 October 2026 combined expected revenue growth with soft demand, dealer inventory above normal, competitive pressure and forecast margin declines for Asian Paints and Kansai Nerolac. Berger’s forecast margin improvement was also an estimate, not a confirmed result.
Before choosing among the shares, investors need a current valuation and company results that show whether consumer demand, inventory and margins are moving in the right direction. The seasonal calendar alone does not establish that buying before Diwali is advantageous, and this evidence does not support a personalized buy recommendation.
