The move was an intraday rally and pullback, not a sustained breakout or a current price quote.
What happened to Bitcoin on October 5?
CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin climbed above $86,000 late Sunday, October 4, and peaked just under $86,950 early Monday, October 5. It then gave back about $1,000 and traded just below $86,000 during Monday’s Asian morning hours. The outlet said the peak was about $500 short of a late-September high near $87,400, making it the second rally in a week to stall below that level. CoinDesk’s October 5 report also put Bitcoin up about 1.3% over the preceding 24 hours at the time of its Asian-session snapshot; that figure is specific to that report’s timing, not a live quote.
Did Bitcoin break $87,000?
No. The reported high was just under $86,950, so Bitcoin approached but did not reach $87,000 in the account of this move. The report describes an intraday peak and retreat, not a sustained move above $87,000 or a daily close there.
Why did Bitcoin fall after nearly reaching $87,000?
The available account identifies the retreat but does not establish why sellers emerged or what specifically triggered the reversal. It provides no order-book evidence, exchange-flow data, or verified mechanism for the pullback. A price falling after a rally is an observed sequence, not proof of a particular cause.

What did the jobs report have to do with Bitcoin?
CoinDesk framed softer U.S. jobs data as context for the climb, saying the figures eased pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep raising rates. It also noted a falling 10-year Treasury yield and gains in global stocks. These were contemporaneous market observations and the outlet’s interpretation; they do not prove that any one factor caused Bitcoin’s rise or subsequent reversal.
The underlying employment release gives the figures behind that context. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that September 2026 nonfarm payroll employment rose by 29,000 and unemployment was 4.2%, describing both as little changed. The release also said employment in all major industries changed little over the month. It did not say the data caused a Bitcoin rally. How to read this market move
- Keep the date attached: the quoted levels describe October 5, 2026, not Bitcoin’s price today.
- Distinguish a peak from a breakout: an intraday approach to a round-number level is not the same as a sustained move or a daily close above it.
- Separate data from explanation: the payroll and unemployment figures are official statistics; the account linking them and broader markets to Bitcoin’s movement is market interpretation, not demonstrated causation.
