What students saw at Samsung’s South Carolina factory
Samsung Electronics Home Appliances America (SEHA) hosted the visit. South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver joined the students as they toured the factory and learned how workers and technology contribute to making washing machines in the United States. Samsung says it has held National Manufacturing Day events with Newberry County schools since 2019, using the visits to connect students with practical applications of STEM and manufacturing careers. Which manufacturing jobs did students learn about?
Students spoke with staff working in four areas:
- Manufacturing: work connected to producing washing machines.
- Maintenance: keeping production equipment operating.
- Quality: work focused on product and process standards.
- Engineering: applying technical expertise to manufacturing.
The visit presented production as a team effort rather than a single factory-floor job. Samsung’s account does not give individual job descriptions or say which roles students observed in detail.
How Samsung described its apprenticeship pathway
Samsung presented its Mold Shop Apprenticeship Program as a route for employees to move from maintenance technician positions toward tool-making careers. The company said the program works with the U.S. Department of Labor and South Carolina technical colleges. Its account does not specify eligibility, program length, wages, credentials, or whether applications are currently open, so students interested in this route would need to seek current details directly from Samsung or the participating institutions.

Can other schools visit the Samsung factory?
Samsung’s account describes the Newberry County school visit and says the company has held similar National Manufacturing Day events with the district since 2019. It does not state whether the factory offers public tours or accepts requests from other schools, so availability should not be assumed.

Cordell Hull, Samsung Electronics America’s executive vice president and head of U.S. public affairs, said: “The workforce will be one of the defining factors in the next chapter of American manufacturing.” He described factory visits as a way for students to see advanced manufacturing and speak directly with workers about the range of careers available. The visit thus connected classroom STEM to roles in production, equipment maintenance, quality, engineering and skilled trades.
