Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything is a book about how India’s Unified Payments Interface developed and reshaped digital payments. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman released it at IITMAA Sangam in Bengaluru on 26 September 2026; IIT Madras then hosted a campus event celebrating its arrival on 5 October. The two events explain why coverage describes the book as launched at IIT Madras.
What happened at IIT Madras?
IIT Madras hosted an event on 5 October 2026 celebrating the arrival of Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything. At the event, former Reserve Bank of India Governor C. Rangarajan called UPI “an envy of the world now, and open to everyone from a street vendor to a billionaire.” PTI also reported that Rangarajan described the book as a “brilliant narrative” of the events, policies and personalities behind UPI. ThePrint’s PTI report covered the campus event.

Where and when was the book released?
The IIT Madras event was not the first documented release. The Ministry of Finance says Sitharaman released the book at IITMAA Sangam in Bengaluru on 26 September 2026. The ministry’s release records that earlier event. The later IIT Madras gathering celebrated the book’s arrival on campus; distinguishing the two dates avoids treating the Bengaluru release and campus event as one occasion.
