Intel shares fell about 2% on October 5, 2026, after Elon Musk said TSMC and Terafab were discussing a possible collaboration. That is a market reaction to an unresolved possibility—not confirmation that TSMC has joined the project, replaced Intel, or taken work away from it. Intel’s participation is disclosed, but key project terms remain uncertain.

Why did Intel stock fall on October 5?

A report published October 5, 2026, said Intel shares declined about 2% after Musk confirmed discussions involving TSMC and Terafab. Tom’s Hardware reported Musk’s words as: “Just discussions, but something may come of it.” The statement acknowledges talks while leaving their outcome open.

The concern for Intel investors is straightforward: if TSMC becomes another significant manufacturing partner for Terafab, Intel may be less central to a project investors had viewed as an opportunity. But the reported discussions do not establish that TSMC signed an agreement, that Intel lost work, or that TSMC will operate the facility.

What is confirmed about Intel’s role in Terafab?

In a SpaceX filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said Intel joined Terafab in April 2026 and was expected to contribute expertise in designing, fabricating, and packaging high-performance chips. The filing also said specific projects, timelines, milestones, and capital expenditures were subject to separate negotiations and agreements. SpaceX’s filing therefore establishes Intel’s participation, not settled project economics or a defined amount of Intel revenue.

SEC correspondence in May 2026 further recorded that Tesla and Intel were not obligated to remain in the project, and that specific projects, anticipated schedules, and spending had not yet been determined in the disclosure discussion. That correspondence describes the status of disclosure at that time; it does not establish whether terms have since changed.

What could the TSMC discussions mean for Intel?

Possible outcome What it could mean What is established
Limited collaboration; Intel remains a participant TSMC could have a defined or supplementary role while Intel continues its disclosed involvement. The effect on Intel’s opportunity would depend on the eventual scope and terms. Intel’s participation was disclosed; the reported TSMC discussions do not establish a completed agreement or changed Intel role.
TSMC takes a substantial manufacturing role Intel’s expected opportunity from Terafab could be smaller or less central than investors had anticipated. This is a possible downside scenario, not a confirmed change. The cited reporting does not establish TSMC’s role or that Intel has lost work.

For either outcome, the unresolved questions include the collaboration’s scope and terms, its timing, customer commitments, and any resulting Intel revenue or spending. Until those details are established, investors should distinguish the possibility of a less favorable outcome from evidence that it has happened.

How large is Terafab against Intel Foundry’s current business?

Intel reported $5.765 billion in Intel Foundry revenue and a $2.089 billion operating loss for the quarter ended June 27, 2026. These are Intel Corporation’s reported Q2 2026 figures. Intel’s quarterly filing shows why revenue should not be treated as proof that the foundry business is profitable: the segment reported a substantial operating loss in the same quarter.

A Terafab opportunity could matter to Intel’s foundry ambitions, but the disclosed figures do not show that this project—or any single customer—would make the business profitable. The company’s own planning ties manufacturing expansion to demand rather than treating capacity growth as automatic.

What would make Intel’s foundry outlook more concrete?

Intel said it committed to completing development of Intel 14A, while the scale and pace of manufacturing expansion would depend on committed demand, including Intel product needs and external customer design wins. Intel’s Q1 2026 earnings materials forecast early Intel 14A design commitments beginning in the second half of 2026 and expanding into the first half of 2027. That was management’s forecast, not confirmation that those commitments have arrived.

For investors assessing the story, the distinction is between plans and evidence of demand. A disclosed design commitment, a finalized Terafab project agreement, or a specified schedule and spending commitment would provide more concrete information than discussions alone. The cited materials do not establish the current status of any such developments.

Why shouldn’t investors panic?

  • The October 5 share-price move followed news of discussions, not a confirmed TSMC deal or announcement that Intel had been displaced.
  • Intel’s participation in Terafab is disclosed, but the cited filing left project-level terms, schedules, milestones, and capital spending to separate agreements.
  • Intel Foundry’s Q2 2026 results show both meaningful revenue and an operating loss, so Terafab should be considered in the context of a business with ongoing financial and execution questions.
  • Intel says the pace of manufacturing expansion depends on committed demand and design wins; its forecast for future commitments is not the same as proof they have materialized.

“Don’t panic” does not mean the risk is immaterial or the share price is certain to rebound. It means that a reported decline and an unfinalized discussion do not, on their own, establish a lasting change to Intel’s business or its long-term prospects. This is general financial context, not personalized investment advice.
