That is an estimate of his holdings, not evidence that he has $1 trillion in cash. Other indexes reported a different figure, and the number can change as share prices move.
What was Musk’s estimated net worth on October 5?
Forbes Australia reported on October 6 that Forbes put Musk’s net worth at $1 trillion on Monday, October 5, up $30.6 billion from Friday. Forbes said SpaceX and Tesla shares climbed after the market opened; SpaceX was up more than 5% to $167 at 10:30 a.m. EDT. Forbes Australia’s report is a dated snapshot, not a standing or guaranteed valuation.
A separate figure appeared in Cinco Días’ October 6 coverage, which cited the Bloomberg Billionaires Index at about $1.04 trillion after gains exceeding $90 billion over recent days. It reported SpaceX shares around $173. That is a different publisher’s index and snapshot; it should not be treated as a direct update to Forbes’ $1 trillion figure.
Why did Musk become a trillionaire “again”?
Forbes Australia reported that Musk first crossed the estimated-wealth threshold in June 2026, after SpaceX began trading publicly. He later fell below it as shares declined, then regained it as SpaceX and Tesla rebounded. The word “again” describes crossing a market-linked estimate threshold more than once, not a change in the definition of a trillionaire.

The October rally was sharp, though reports describe different periods and prices. 24/7 Wall St. reported SpaceX stock rose about 15% over two sessions and closed at $171.09 on October 5, with Monday’s rise at 7.63%. It attributed part of the move to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas reiterating an Overweight rating and a $300 price target. A target is an analyst’s opinion, not a promised trading price or proof of a company’s intrinsic value.
Why can a stock move change a wealth estimate so quickly?
A billionaire wealth estimate can reflect the quoted market value of large shareholdings. When the price used to value those shares rises or falls, the estimated value of the holdings can move too. That is why a rally in SpaceX and Tesla shares can add billions to an estimate without Musk receiving that amount as cash.

The October 5 close was not a record: 24/7 Wall St. reported that SpaceX remained below its June peak of $225.64. The same outlet said insider lockups were set to expire through December, potentially bringing more shares to market. Those are market conditions that could affect trading; they do not establish what the share price will do next.
Does Musk have $1 trillion in cash?
No such conclusion follows from the reported net-worth estimate. A net-worth figure represents an estimate of assets minus liabilities, with much of the value here tied to company shares. The coverage cited above does not quantify Musk’s current liquid assets, so it does not establish a cash balance.

Quoted share value and spendable cash are different. Turning a large holding into cash may involve sale restrictions, taxes, control considerations and the market impact of selling. The reported estimates do not calculate those effects or show that all holdings could be sold at the quoted prices.

SpaceX’s rising share price is a market signal, not a complete account of the company’s finances or future prospects. In its June 12 coverage of the public-market debut, the Associated Press reported that SpaceX shares opened around $150, rose to around $168 and ended just below $161, giving the company a reported market value of $2.1 trillion. Forbes’ estimate of Musk’s wealth at that time was $1.1 trillion.

The AP also reported disagreement over that IPO valuation: Morningstar called it “significantly overvalued” and estimated the company at $780 billion. Those are June 2026 historical figures, not current prices. The AP further reported that SpaceX lost $8.7 billion between the start of 2025 and March 31, 2026, and that the company said some plans relied on “unproven technologies.” Together, the reporting illustrates why an enthusiastic share price and a company’s operating performance are separate considerations.
24/7 Wall St. reported a second-quarter net loss of $541 million and capital expenditures of $18.369 billion, including $15.83 billion for AI computing capacity. These are figures reported by that outlet; they should not be confused with a verified statement of current performance in this article.
