2 Beaten-Down Stocks to Consider Buying and Holding for the Next Decade

Netflix and Intuitive Surgical are the Motley Fool’s two picks, but their long-term cases depend on better streaming engagement and continued growth in robotic surgery.

The two stocks in Prosper Junior Bakiny’s October 5, 2026, Motley Fool article are Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) and Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG). His bullish cases hinge on future execution: Netflix must convert its audience into stronger engagement and revenue, while Intuitive Surgical must keep expanding robotic surgery adoption and manage the rollout of its newer systems. These are the author’s investment views, not independently validated forecasts or personalized recommendations.

What makes these two stocks “beaten down” in the article?

Bakiny’s article described Intuitive Surgical shares as having fallen about 30% during 2026, as of October 5. That is the article’s reported figure, not an independently checked current return. The title groups Netflix with Intuitive Surgical, but the article’s central Netflix concern is engagement: it reported that viewing hours grew 2% year over year in the first half of 2026.

The two stocks therefore represent different kinds of recovery thesis. Netflix’s depends on better monetization and audience engagement in a competitive streaming market. Intuitive Surgical’s depends on growth in the use of robotic surgery, alongside successful execution as the company introduces newer systems.

Why the article is bullish on Netflix

A large audience could create more ways to earn revenue

Bakiny’s case is that Netflix’s paid-subscriber ecosystem could support stronger engagement and monetization. He points to sports rights and advertising as possible contributors. The article also reported that streaming accounted for just under 50% of U.S. TV viewing time in May 2026. That figure is attributed to the Motley Fool article; it is not an independently verified measurement here, and it describes U.S. viewing at that time.

#1 Best Overall

A streaming hub is a possibility, not a confirmed plan

The article says management had reportedly considered a broader streaming hub, but presents that path as uncertain—not as a confirmed company plan. Any investment case that depends on such a hub should be treated as speculative unless Netflix confirms its plans and demonstrates execution.

The main risk is whether viewers spend more time with the service

More subscribers or new offerings do not automatically mean stronger engagement. The article’s reported 2% year-over-year growth in Netflix viewing hours during the first half of 2026 underscores why execution matters: the company must compete for people’s attention, not just offer more ways to monetize it. Bakiny wrote, “In my view, at current levels, the stock is a buy.” That is his opinion, not a company statement or an assessment of any individual investor’s circumstances.

Why the article is bullish on Intuitive Surgical

An installed base and room for broader adoption

Bakiny’s argument centers on the da Vinci robotic-surgery system and the opportunity to expand its use. The article cited a da Vinci installed base of nearly 12,000 devices. It also said fewer than 8% of relevant soft-tissue procedures were performed robotically, attributing that point to Johnson & Johnson. Both figures are reported by the Motley Fool article rather than independently verified here; the procedure figure applies to the relevant soft-tissue procedures described, not to all surgery.

The investment thesis is that a substantial installed base, combined with low robotic penetration in those procedures, could support further growth. Low adoption alone does not guarantee that procedures will shift to robotic techniques, or that Intuitive Surgical will capture any resulting demand.

Competition and rollout execution could weigh on results

The article identifies new robotic-surgery competitors and margin pressure partly associated with the rollout of da Vinci 5 as risks. It also suggests newer systems could eventually help expand the market. That is a thesis, not a guaranteed outcome: the company must execute on the rollout, and market growth does not ensure it will maintain its competitive position or margins.

How the two investment cases differ

Investment question Netflix Intuitive Surgical
What could drive growth? Stronger engagement and monetization, including potential contributions from sports rights and advertising. Expansion of robotic surgery adoption, supported by the da Vinci installed base.
What execution matters most? Winning viewers’ time and converting the audience into revenue. Growing use of robotic procedures while managing the rollout of newer systems.
What risks does the article identify? Weak engagement and viewing-hours growth amid competition for viewers; the broader streaming-hub route is uncertain. New robotic-surgery competitors and margin pressure partly tied to the da Vinci 5 rollout.
What does the article not establish? A matched valuation comparison, price target, or suitability for a particular investor. A matched valuation comparison, price target, or suitability for a particular investor.

What to check before treating either stock as a long-term buy

  • Check current company results. The figures above are those reported in an October 5, 2026, opinion article; they should not be assumed to reflect later results or conditions.
  • Test the Netflix thesis against execution. Look for evidence that engagement and monetization are improving, rather than assuming sports, advertising, or a possible hub will deliver growth.
  • Test the Intuitive Surgical thesis against adoption and margins. Consider whether robotic procedure use is expanding and how competition and the da Vinci 5 rollout affect performance.
  • Assess valuation and personal fit separately. The article does not provide a matched valuation framework, price targets, or investor-specific suitability analysis. A compelling business thesis by itself does not establish that a stock is attractively priced or appropriate for a particular portfolio.
