It’s possible, but Microsoft was not ahead in the latest dated snapshot available here. At the October 6, 2026 close, third-party estimates put Apple’s market capitalization at about $4.87 trillion and Microsoft’s at about $3.93 trillion—a gap of roughly $0.94 trillion in Apple’s favor. Whether Microsoft can close that gap by the end of 2027 remains uncertain.
Where Microsoft and Apple stood on October 6, 2026
StockAnalysis reported closing share prices of $333.63 for Apple and $529.30 for Microsoft on October 6, 2026, alongside estimated market capitalizations of approximately $4.87 trillion and $3.93 trillion, respectively. Market capitalization is the value of a company’s outstanding shares at a given share price. It moves as share prices and shares outstanding change, so these figures are a dated third-party snapshot—not a permanent ranking or a company-reported financial measure.
What the latest results say—and don’t say
Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 growth
Microsoft reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $331.8 billion, up 18% from the prior year. Microsoft Cloud revenue was $214.4 billion, up 27%; Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 41%. Microsoft’s 10-K gives Microsoft Cloud revenue of $214.4 billion for FY2026, compared with $168.9 billion in FY2025 and $137.7 billion in FY2024. These figures show recent business growth, including in cloud services. They do not establish how durable future demand will be, how profitable AI-related growth will prove, or how investors will value Microsoft’s future cash flows.
Apple’s June-quarter performance
Apple reported fiscal third-quarter 2026 revenue of $109.4 billion, up 16%, and diluted earnings per share of $2.02, up 29%. The quarter ended June 27, 2026; Apple said revenue and EPS set June-quarter records, with growth across iPhone, Mac, Services, and geographic segments. The Microsoft figures cover its fiscal year ended June 30, 2026; Apple’s figures cover one fiscal quarter ended June 27, 2026. They are different reporting periods and should not be read as a like-for-like comparison of company size or growth.
What would have to happen for Microsoft to overtake Apple?
Microsoft would need its market capitalization to rise relative to Apple’s by enough to erase the October 2026 gap. That could happen through different combinations of share-price performance and changes in shares outstanding at either company. Recent revenue growth alone cannot determine the outcome: market caps reflect investor expectations about future cash flows as well as current results.

To assess whether the prediction is becoming more or less plausible, follow the same measures for both companies over time:
- Market-cap gap: compare both companies at the same market close using a consistent data source and method.
- Comparable growth and earnings: use equivalent reporting periods and distinguish GAAP from non-GAAP measures where relevant.
- Cloud and AI economics: track whether Microsoft’s demand translates into sustained growth and profitability, not just revenue momentum.
- Products and services: monitor Apple’s reported performance across iPhone, Mac, Services, and its geographic markets.
- Margins, investment, and share count: future filings and earnings calls can show how infrastructure spending, profitability, buybacks, dividends, and dilution affect the companies’ financial trajectories.
- Valuation expectations: consider what investors are paying for anticipated future performance, not only the latest growth rate.
Account for Microsoft’s FY2027 reporting change
Microsoft said in a September 2, 2026 Form 8-K that it would report performance under two segments beginning in FY2027: “Agents and Infra” and “Devices and Consumer.” That reorganization can make future segment comparisons with older periods less direct; readers should use the company’s explanations of the new structure when reviewing subsequent results.
