Energy was the S&P 500’s top-performing sector in the third quarter of 2026, and independent refiners posted the standout company returns in Robert Rapier’s analysis. He attributes their surge to wider refining margins as disruptions constrained supplies of transportation fuels, especially diesel. Those returns describe one quarter—not a forecast—and the sector figures differ between sources.
What led the market in Q3 2026?
Robert Rapier’s October 6, 2026 analysis reports that Energy gained 16.5% in Q3, compared with a 2.0% gain for the S&P 500. Clearstead’s Q3 review, using Bloomberg data through September 30, reports Energy up 17.2% and the S&P 500 up 2.3%. Both sources identify Energy as a leader, but their reported figures differ; the available material does not establish a shared calculation method. Rapier’s excerpt also does not specify whether the returns are price returns or total returns.
Axios’s October 1 account likewise describes energy stocks as among the quarter’s strongest U.S. assets. It identifies oil, diesel and interest rates as major forces in the period, and reports a 2% S&P 500 gain. As Matt Phillips put it, “Oil and rates giveth, and taketh away.” That broad context does not verify the individual refiner returns.
Which refiners had the strongest reported returns?
Rapier reports the following Q3 gains for three independent refiners. These are figures from his analysis, not a uniform audited comparison; the excerpt does not state whether they represent price or total returns.

| Company | Reported Q3 2026 gain |
|---|---|
| Marathon Petroleum | 55.1% (Rapier, October 6, 2026) |
| Phillips 66 | 51.8% (Rapier, October 6, 2026) |
| Valero Energy | 49.4% (Rapier, October 6, 2026) |
Rapier says the three averaged more than 52%. The comparison shows why refiners “stole the show” in his account: their reported gains were far above the sector benchmark, though a single-quarter ranking says nothing by itself about what the stocks will do next.
Why can refiners gain when oil prices move?
A refiner buys crude and turns it into products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Its economics depend partly on the difference between the cost of crude inputs and the value of the products it sells. That difference is commonly described as a refining margin or, in some comparisons, a crack spread. A higher crude price alone does not necessarily mean higher profits for a refiner: the product prices and input costs matter relative to one another.

Rapier’s explanation is that disruptions to Russian and Middle Eastern refining capacity tightened global transportation-fuel supply and widened margins. He points particularly to strong diesel margins and high U.S. refinery utilization by September. When product supply is constrained while demand and selling prices remain firm, refiners can benefit from a wider gap between product values and crude costs.
Energy companies do not all have the same exposures
Rapier’s reported group averages illustrate the differences within the sector. The samples are those tracked in his analysis, not a single standardized dataset across every energy company.

| Business group | Reported average Q3 2026 gain | What chiefly shapes its exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated majors tracked by Rapier | About 19.9% | Combined operations, including upstream production and downstream refining |
| E&P companies in Rapier’s sample | About 13.1% | Exploration and production; exposure differs with oil and natural-gas prices |
| Midstream group in Rapier’s sample | About 12.0% | Pipeline and related infrastructure businesses, with revenue drivers distinct from refining |
Rapier also describes stronger tanker returns and weaker results among several gas-focused producers and pipeline operators. The contrast is a reminder that “Energy” is not one uniform bet on crude: production, refining, integrated operations, pipelines and tanker transport respond to different market conditions.

Refining is cyclical. Rapier identifies three ways unusually strong margins could fade:
Rank #4
- New in manufacturer packaging.
- Realistic Detail.
- Robust materials.
- Original packaging.
- Scale Miniature for For Model Trains and Dioramas.
- Supply returns: disrupted capacity comes back online or other refiners increase output, easing product shortages.
- Demand weakens: lower consumption of transportation fuels can reduce product prices and margins.
- Capacity responds: additional refining supply can narrow the gap between product values and crude costs.
Geopolitical events and interest-rate moves can also affect energy prices and wider market valuations, as Axios’s account of Q3 emphasizes. The exceptional returns reported for the quarter are historical observations; they should not be treated as a promise of future performance.
