Adam Neumann says a roughly 30-minute car conversation with SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son changed what he was focused on: instead of WeWork’s mission, he began thinking about money and scale. In his retrospective account, that was when his ego took over—and when WeWork’s decline began. It is a revealing personal turning point, not proof that one meeting caused the company’s later collapse.
What Neumann says happened in the car
In an October 5, 2026 report, Fortune recounts Neumann’s September interview with Steven Bartlett. Neumann said WeWork’s board had agreed the night before the meeting that he would raise $300 million to $400 million, slow expansion, move toward profitability, and take the company public.
Son reportedly had only 12 minutes for a visit to WeWork’s office, then invited Neumann to continue talking in his car. Neumann recalled the meeting and ride lasting about half an hour. He said Son offered “$4.2 to be exact” billion, and the two signed terms on an iPad. Fortune reports that the SoftBank investment announced the following year ultimately totaled $4.4 billion.
Neumann described a change in his own mindset: “The guy that sat in the car was a mission-driven entrepreneur who really believed in creating a world where people make a life and not just a living,” he said. “Every step that I take, it goes higher and higher. And by the time I walk into HQ, 18th Street, I forgot what we were all about. ‘It suddenly became about the money,’ he said.” These quotations are reproduced in Fortune’s account of the interview.

How the deal figures fit together
The figures describe different things and stages, rather than a single agreed amount or valuation.
| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| $300 million to $400 million | The amount Neumann says the board had expected him to raise before the meeting, as reported by Fortune. |
| $4.2 billion | The offer Neumann recalled Son making during the car conversation, according to Fortune. |
| $4.4 billion | The total SoftBank investment Fortune says was announced the following year. An earlier WIRED account described $3 billion going into WeWork and $1.4 billion into three regional companies. |
| Up to $20 billion | The valuation WIRED described for the earlier investment stage; it is not WeWork’s later peak valuation. |
| $47 billion | WeWork’s reported private valuation peak, cited retrospectively by Fortune and other accounts. It was not a public-market price or evidence that the business was durably profitable. |
Why the car ride is not a complete explanation for WeWork’s collapse
Neumann’s story is useful as an account of how he remembers a strategic and personal inflection point. But a founder’s hindsight cannot establish that the conversation caused the company’s eventual failure. The scale of SoftBank’s offer, the company’s governance and financing, and the economics of its business all matter to that history.

A mismatch between leases and membership
WeWork leased buildings for long periods and sublet offices and desks to members on shorter terms. That structure could leave the company paying fixed rent even when demand weakened or market rents fell. WIRED quotes IWG CEO Mark Dixon describing the danger: “The problem was catastrophically falling rents.” His point was that an operator with long leases can be stuck with costs above what the market supports.
A private valuation was not proof of a sound business
The $47 billion figure was a peak private valuation, not a measure of what public investors ultimately paid or a guarantee that WeWork’s commitments could be covered by operating revenue. The company attempted an IPO in 2019, Neumann left as CEO that year, and WeWork filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2023. It emerged from bankruptcy in 2024, according to The Associated Press and TIME. Fortune characterizes the debt alongside the 2023 filing as nearly $19 billion; that figure should be understood as Fortune’s reporting, not as a substitute for bankruptcy schedules.

What Neumann’s account does—and does not—tell readers
Neumann’s reflection links a dramatic funding offer to a shift in his priorities: he says he entered the car focused on a mission and left focused on money. That is the core of his claim that his ego took over. His later comments about success and fulfilment are likewise his own explanation of his experience; they do not independently establish that his behavior changed or that his current venture, Flow, will avoid WeWork’s risks.
The distinction matters. A half-hour encounter can be a meaningful moment in a founder’s personal story while remaining only one element in a much longer business failure. The company’s lease exposure, expansion choices, financing, governance, and market conditions cannot be reduced to a single conversation.
