Tech Billionaires Gained $845 Billion in 2026 as AI Stocks Soared

Technology fortunes in Bloomberg’s top-500 index gained about $845 billion through September 30, 2026, while non-tech fortunes lost $62 billion. The estimate is not an AI-only tally or realized cash.

Technology fortunes among the world’s 500 richest people rose by about $845 billion through September 30, 2026, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index figures reported by Bloomberg. The index’s roughly 100 technology billionaires posted its largest first-nine-month gain on record, while fortunes outside technology fell by a combined $62 billion. The total is a technology-sector estimate—not an AI-only tally or cash deposited into billionaires’ accounts.

What the $845 billion figure measures

The figure is the combined change in estimated fortunes for roughly 100 technology billionaires included in Bloomberg’s ranking of the world’s 500 richest people, from the start of 2026 through September 30. Bloomberg’s report, syndicated by Yahoo Finance, describes it as the largest gain for the first nine months of a year in the index’s history.

It does not mean those people earned $845 billion in salaries, sold assets for that amount, or received that sum as cash. Billionaire net worth estimates move with the value assigned to assets, including publicly traded shares and private-company holdings. A rising estimate can reflect a higher share price even when the owner has not sold any shares.

Why “AI billionaires” is an imperfect label

The reported group is technology billionaires, not a list limited to founders or owners of artificial-intelligence companies. Bloomberg’s reporting links the broader gains to the AI boom and rising technology stocks, but it does not attribute all $845 billion to AI or establish AI as the sole cause of every fortune’s increase. The Economic Times’ reproduction of the report also describes the group as technology billionaires and associates the gains with AI and technology stocks (The Economic Times).

Technology fortunes gained while other fortunes fell

Over the same period, billionaires whose fortunes came from outside technology lost a combined $62 billion, according to the Bloomberg figures. Technology billionaires held about $4.6 trillion in combined wealth—36% of the total wealth represented in the index—while making up about one-fifth of its members. Those figures show how concentrated the listed wealth was in technology: the group’s share of total wealth was substantially larger than its share of people.

The distribution of gains was also geographically concentrated. Americans accounted for 94% of the index’s net gains in Bloomberg’s reporting. That is a share of the gains, not a statement that 94% of all billionaires or index members are American.

How much did individual fortunes change?

Elon Musk was reported to have gained $310 billion through September, according to a separate Yahoo Finance account of the Bloomberg figures. That account characterized the gain as roughly 40% of the index’s total increase; the percentage is that report’s characterization, rather than a separate measure of AI-related wealth (Yahoo Finance).

Individual net-worth changes are estimates tied to a reporting cutoff and can move with the underlying assets. The $310 billion figure is therefore not equivalent to realized income or proceeds from selling investments.

The gains can reverse as markets move

The same reporting describes a pullback after the index’s mid-June peak: the combined wealth of its 500 members fell from $13.4 trillion to $12.6 trillion, a 6% decline. That comparison is from the peak to the later reported level, not a full-year result. It illustrates why a year-to-date wealth gain should be read as a snapshot: public share prices change, and valuations of private companies can also be revised.

For personal-finance readers, the distinction matters. A headline net-worth increase is not a measure of cash flow, investment returns available to ordinary investors, or money that can be spent without selling assets and potentially facing taxes or other costs.
