Indian equities rebounded intraday on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after a run of losses. Business Standard reported the Sensex up 699.86 points (0.90%) at its intraday high and the Nifty 50 up 187 points (0.77%). Those were not closing gains: by the end of the session, the indices were up 628.04 points (0.82%) and 153.55 points (0.64%), respectively. The headline’s 706-point Sensex figure does not match the detailed intraday figure reported by Business Standard, so it should be treated as a rounded or time-specific headline figure rather than the confirmed session close.

What happened in the August 20 session?

The Sensex and Nifty 50 rose after recent declines, but their gains eased from the intraday readings by the close. Business Standard’s detailed report put the Sensex’s intraday rise at 699.86 points to 77,609.54 and the Nifty’s at 187 points to 24,265.15. At the close, the Sensex stood at 77,537.72, up 628.04 points, while the Nifty ended at 24,231.85, up 153.55 points.

India Today published an earlier snapshot at 1:25 p.m.: Sensex up 668.92 points at 77,578.60 and Nifty up 168.90 points near 24,247. The changing readings show why a market move should be identified as intraday or closing and tied to a timestamp. The sources reviewed do not establish the exact observation time behind the headline’s 706-point figure.

What reports said supported the rebound

Lower US Treasury yields and overseas sentiment

Business Standard linked the rally partly to declining US Treasury yields after an announcement about larger buybacks of longer-dated debt, along with stronger sentiment in Asian and US markets. The outlet reported US 30-year and 10-year Treasury yields at 5.18% and 4.63%, respectively, on the day. These were factors cited in its account, not proof that any single development caused the Indian market move.

Why the market had been under pressure

India Today reported that the Nifty had fallen for seven consecutive sessions, losing 2.1%, while the Sensex declined in six of the preceding seven sessions. After that run, bargain buying—investors purchasing shares they view as cheaper after declines—and short covering may have contributed to the bounce. Short covering means traders buy shares or index exposure to close positions that were betting on prices falling; it can lift prices without showing that investors expect a durable recovery.

What could still weigh on stocks?

India Today pointed to elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions in West Asia and uncertainty about global interest rates as risks. Such factors can affect investor sentiment and the outlook for costs and economic growth, but the reports do not establish how markets will respond next.

Business Standard described the technical outlook as guarded below 24,300 and cited 24,000 as immediate support. These are analyst levels for that session, not guaranteed thresholds or investment recommendations. The article also quoted Rajesh Palviya, Head of Research at Axis Direct, as saying that a sustained break above 24,300 would be needed to confirm a recovery toward 24,450, with softer crude prices a possible catalyst. That was a time-specific technical view, not a forecast that the levels would be reached.

How to compare the Sensex and Nifty figures

When reading a market headline, compare like with like: use the same observation time, index level, point change and percentage change. An intraday high is not the session’s closing move, and reports published at different times may show different figures for the same trading day.
