BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) has an established role supplying nuclear reactors, components and fuel for the U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion program. Its business also reaches commercial nuclear equipment and services, and the company reported strong 2025 revenue, earnings and backlog. Those facts make BWXT a notable nuclear-industry business—but they do not establish that its shares are attractively valued or the best nuclear stock to buy.
What BWX Technologies does
BWXT operates through Government Operations and Commercial Operations. Government Operations engineers, designs and manufactures naval nuclear components, reactors and fuel for the U.S. Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration’s Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Commercial Operations supplies equipment such as steam generators, heat exchangers, pressure vessels and components, as well as containers for spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste. The company also works on advanced reactor and fuel development for government and other programs. BWX Technologies’ 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 23, 2026, describes these activities.
The Navy connection is central, but it is not the whole investment case: BWXT’s sales are not all Navy reactor revenue, and its developing advanced-reactor opportunities should not be treated as an established, material revenue stream without supporting evidence.
What BWXT reported for 2025
In its February 23, 2026 full-year release, BWXT reported $3.198 billion in 2025 revenue, $4.01 in non-GAAP earnings per share and $295 million in free cash flow. The company described the year as a record; CEO Rex D. Geveden said, “We delivered a strong fourth quarter, and a record year for BWXT.” These are company-reported results, with EPS identified as non-GAAP. The full-year results release provides the figures and management’s statement.

How to read the $7.3 billion backlog
BWXT reported year-end 2025 backlog of $7.3 billion, up 50% year over year. The more precise Form 10-K figure is $7.2607 billion, including $2.1513 billion of unfunded U.S. government backlog. Management attributed the increase to large multiyear awards involving naval propulsion, special materials and commercial nuclear power.
Backlog is a measure of contracted work, not cash already collected or profit guaranteed. BWXT expected to recognize approximately 40% of backlog revenue by the end of 2026, with the rest recognized later. The 10-K also says contracts may be canceled, modified or otherwise changed, and that many government contracts depend on annual appropriations. For investors, the large backlog supports visibility into potential future work, while its timing and funding conditions limit how confidently it can be translated into near-term revenue.

What management expects in 2026
BWXT’s initial 2026 outlook calls for approximately $3.75 billion in revenue, $645 million to $660 million in adjusted EBITDA, $4.55 to $4.70 in non-GAAP EPS and $305 million to $320 million in free cash flow. These are forward-looking management estimates, not reported results. The company says it does not provide GAAP guidance because it cannot reliably forecast items excluded from its non-GAAP measures. The guidance appears in the February 23, 2026 results release.
Why BWXT could merit a place on a nuclear-stock shortlist
- Established government work: Its role in supplying the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program is an existing business, rather than simply a proposed reactor concept.
- More than one source of demand: Commercial nuclear equipment and services broaden the business beyond naval propulsion.
- Scale and visibility: The 2025 results and multiyear backlog provide evidence of substantial current operations and prospective work.
- Potential growth, with execution required: Management’s 2026 guidance anticipates higher revenue and earnings, while delivery, investment and funding determine whether those estimates are achieved.
Risks investors should weigh
Government budgets and contract timing
Government Operations is substantially influenced by U.S. national-security spending. Appropriations cycles can affect when contracts receive funding and when work proceeds, so a large award or backlog does not remove budget-related uncertainty.

Unfunded and changeable backlog
The 2025 backlog included $2.1513 billion of unfunded U.S. government work. The filing also warns that contracts can be canceled or modified. Treat backlog as an indicator of potential demand, not a guaranteed schedule of sales.
Delivery, investment and integration
BWXT’s growth depends on executing commercial and government projects while supporting expansion. The 2025 results release notes acquisitions and increased capital spending to support growth; these raise execution and integration demands and can affect cash generation.

Guidance is not a result
The 2026 outlook is management’s estimate, and the company distinguishes its non-GAAP guidance from GAAP financial reporting. Actual results can differ as funding, schedules and project delivery evolve.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the evidence make BWXT a top nuclear stock?
It supports calling BWXT an established nuclear supplier with strong reported 2025 operating results and a substantial multiyear backlog. It does not, on its own, prove that BWXT is the top nuclear stock to buy. That conclusion requires a dated share price and valuation analysis, as well as a comparison with alternatives on contract quality, funded backlog, government versus commercial exposure, capital needs, cash generation and the maturity of advanced-reactor work.
