Bitcoin retreated after another failed push above $87,000, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite finished at record highs on October 6, 2026. The moves overlapped in time, but the available reporting does not establish that stock gains caused Bitcoin’s pullback.
What happened in Bitcoin and stocks?
In CoinDesk’s Tuesday, October 6, Asian-morning snapshot, Bitcoin was about $85,600, down roughly 1.2%, after sellers turned it back from above $87,000 on Monday. CoinDesk counted three rejections of that area since September 23. This was an intraday snapshot, not a U.S. closing price. CoinDesk’s October 6 report described the repeated selling.
U.S. equities moved higher that day. The Associated Press reported the S&P 500 rose 0.6% to a record close of 7,818.93, above its prior closing high from August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 253 points, or 0.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4% to a record close, extending the record it had set the previous day. The AP’s October 6 market wrap provides the closing figures.
| Market | October 6 report | Time basis |

| S&P 500 | 7,818.93, up 0.6%; record close | U.S. market close, AP |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Up 253 points, or 0.5% | U.S. market close, AP |
| Nasdaq Composite | Up 0.4%; record close | U.S. market close, AP |
Why $87,000 matters—and what it does not mean
CoinDesk described $87,000 as an area where sellers had repeatedly appeared. That makes it a market-observed resistance level, not a fixed ceiling or a guarantee that Bitcoin cannot rise above it. A sustained move above the area would suggest, in CoinDesk’s framing, that selling pressure there had been absorbed; it would not by itself establish what happens next.

The prior day’s move showed how quickly the picture could change. In its Monday, October 5 Asian-morning snapshot, CoinDesk reported Bitcoin briefly peaked just below $86,950 before falling back to just under $86,000. The report put the late-September high near $87,400. CoinDesk’s October 5 account describes that approach and reversal.
What market observers said about Bitcoin’s momentum
CoinDesk quoted FxPro analyst Alex Kuptsikevich describing “a trend of higher local lows,” while noting that “the bulls have been unable to gain momentum.” The combination suggests Bitcoin had been finding support at progressively higher short-term levels without breaking decisively through resistance. It is an analyst’s reading of a chart pattern, not a validated forecast.

Kuptsikevich also said the price had approached the apex of a triangle formed by horizontal resistance and rising support, and that a break from the pattern could bring increased volatility. The statement points to the possibility of a larger move in either direction; it does not specify a reliable target or predict which way a break would go.
How rates fit into the picture
CoinDesk’s October 5 report connected Bitcoin’s rise above $86,000 to softer U.S. jobs data and reduced pressure on the Federal Reserve to keep raising rates. That is the report’s explanation of the backdrop, not proof that the data caused the price move. The same account noted the 10-year Treasury yield remained near its highest level since 2002.

In its October 6 account, CoinDesk cited a 10-year U.S. Treasury yield of 5.32% and reported that yields were rising. That figure belongs to the report’s time context; it should not be read as the yield at the U.S. close. Together, the reports show why rate expectations were part of the market discussion, but they do not establish that yields drove Bitcoin lower while stocks rose.

- Keep the timestamps straight. Bitcoin’s quoted price is an Asian-morning snapshot; the stock figures are U.S. closing results. They are not simultaneous closing prices.
- Separate price direction from explanation. Bitcoin was lower in the cited snapshot as the major U.S. indexes posted gains, but the reports do not show that one move caused the other.
- Treat resistance as a level traders are watching. Repeated selling around $87,000 is evidence of observed market behavior in this period, not a rule about future prices.
- Remember that records are specific to the measure. AP reported record closing highs for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite on October 6; the Dow’s reported gain was not described as a record close.
These figures describe a narrow period ending with the October 6, 2026 U.S. market close. Bitcoin prices, Treasury yields and index records can change quickly, so they are a dated market update rather than a current quote or investing signal.
