World stocks mostly rose and oil prices fell on Monday, October 5, 2026, as investors weighed easing inflation concerns and the perceived lower chance of another Federal Reserve rate hike. The picture was mixed rather than universal: Japan’s Nikkei surged, Europe was divided and U.S. stock-index futures slipped slightly. These are figures reported by the Associated Press that day, not live market quotes.

Why did shares rise while oil prices fell?

The Associated Press attributed the share gains in part to easing inflation worries and investors’ perception that another Federal Reserve rate hike had become less likely. The report linked that interpretation to a U.S. jobs update: employers reportedly added 29,000 more jobs than they cut in the preceding month, below economists’ expectations and down from a net hiring rate of 133,000 in August. Those employment figures and the market interpretation are as AP reported them; they are not independent confirmation of the underlying release or proof that inflation concerns alone drove prices.

Oil’s decline was a separate market move. AP reported that uncertainty about how the war with Iran could reshape the global oil industry remained a source of volatility. A one-day fall in oil prices does not resolve that uncertainty or establish a single cause for the move.

How markets moved on October 5, 2026

The AP snapshot combined completed Asian sessions, early European trading and U.S. futures. Those are different points in the trading day and should not be read as simultaneous closing results.

All figures in the table were reported by the Associated Press on October 5, 2026, and have not been independently checked here. Shanghai and South Korea markets were closed for national holidays, so the report’s broad description of world shares does not mean every Asian market traded that day.

What the regional differences show

Japan led the reported Asian gains. AP also noted that Tokyo Electron shares rose 5.5%, SoftBank Group gained 3% and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. gained 3%. Those individual stock moves accompanied the strong Nikkei session, but they do not by themselves establish why the broader index rose.

Europe did not move as one market: the CAC 40 was down in early trading, while the DAX and FTSE 100 were modestly higher. U.S. futures were slightly negative even though the prior Friday’s cash-market session had ended higher. AP reported Friday gains of 0.7% for the S&P 500, 0.5% for the Dow and 1.2% for the Nasdaq Composite. Futures indicate where contracts were trading at the time of the report; they are not a forecast or a substitute for the next cash-market close.

What the report says about currencies

AP reported the dollar at 157.71 Japanese yen, down from 157.83, and the euro at $1.1204, down from $1.1257. These are dated currency quotes from the same October 5 report, not current exchange rates.

How to read this market snapshot

  • Keep the date attached. The figures describe market activity reported on October 5, 2026; prices and index levels may have changed since then.
  • Distinguish sessions. Asian closes, European early trading and U.S. futures are not directly comparable as though they were all final closes at the same moment.
  • Separate the explanations. AP described easing inflation concern and lower perceived odds of another Fed hike as supportive for shares, while Iran-war uncertainty remained relevant to oil.
  • Read “world shares” as a broad summary. Some markets were closed, and the reported indexes moved in different directions.
