Dario Amodei Received $18 Million in 2025 Compensation—Where He Ranks Among Tech CEOs

Reuters reported $18 million in 2025 total compensation for Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, mostly in stock and options. The figure is not his salary or a measure of his wealth.

Reuters reported on October 6, 2026, citing Anthropic’s IPO prospectus, that CEO Dario Amodei received $18 million in total compensation for 2025. Most of the package came from stock and options, not salary. That puts the reported amount above the 2025 figures for the CEOs of Alphabet and Amazon, but far below Oracle co-CEO Clayton Magouyrk’s reported pay. It is a comparison of annual compensation—not a measure of Amodei’s net worth or a formal ranking of all technology CEOs.

What does the $18 million figure include?

The $18 million is Amodei’s reported total compensation for 2025, according to Reuters’ review of Anthropic’s IPO prospectus. Reuters said stock and options made up most of the package. The prospectus was not publicly available in the reporting reviewed here, so the figure is attributed to Reuters’ account rather than independently verified against a public filing. Anthropic’s spokesperson declined to comment, Reuters reported.

The figure is not the same as Amodei’s salary. Reuters reported that his annual salary was doubled to $1.4 million in July 2026. That is a 2026 salary change, whereas $18 million is his reported total compensation for the previous year.

How does Amodei’s reported pay compare with other CEOs?

The following figures are for 2025 and were reported by Reuters from company disclosures or filings. They are not perfectly like-for-like: compensation packages can include equity, security, travel, and other benefits.

Executive Company Reported 2025 compensation Important qualification
Dario Amodei Anthropic $18 million Reuters reported the figure from its review of Anthropic’s IPO prospectus; most was stock and options. Reuters report republished by AOL
Sundar Pichai Alphabet $10.9 million Includes $8.8 million in personal security costs. Reuters report republished by AOL
Andy Jassy Amazon $2.1 million Primarily reflected travel and security costs. Reuters report republished by AOL
Clayton Magouyrk Oracle $627.5 million Reported 2025 compensation for Oracle’s co-CEO. Reuters report republished by AOL

On those comparisons, Amodei’s reported compensation was higher than Pichai’s and Jassy’s, but much lower than Magouyrk’s. Calling it “middle of the pack” is a broad characterization, not a published percentile or a definitive ranking: the answer changes with the companies selected and the way compensation is measured.

Why compensation figures can give different rankings

Annual reported compensation and the SEC measure called “compensation actually paid” are different measures. The latter incorporates changes in the value of unvested equity, which can make it substantially higher or lower than the amount reported as annual compensation.

For 2025, Reuters reported “compensation actually paid” of $213.9 million for Pichai and $13.2 million for Jassy. Those amounts should not be compared directly with Amodei’s $18 million as though all three were calculated on the same basis. Reuters report republished by AOL

The peer set matters, too. Reuters reported that the AFL-CIO put average annual S&P 500 CEO compensation at $22.8 million for 2025, up 21% year over year; that figure excluded Elon Musk’s $158 billion restricted-stock plan. This broad S&P 500 average is not a technology-CEO ranking, and its reported pay measure should not be treated as a direct match for every executive figure above. Reuters report republished by AOL

Does $18 million reveal Amodei’s wealth?

No. Annual compensation is not the same as total wealth, particularly for a founder whose stake in a private company may be substantial. Reuters reported that the prospectus it reviewed did not disclose the founders’ ownership stakes, so the $18 million figure cannot establish Amodei’s net worth or the value of his Anthropic holdings.

Reuters also reported that Amodei, his sister Daniela Amodei, and other co-founders pledged to dedicate 80% of their personal Anthropic equity to charitable causes. That pledge does not disclose the value of the equity or change what the $18 million annual-compensation figure measures. Reuters report republished by AOL

What the reported IPO plans do—and do not—mean

Reuters reported that Anthropic was considering a possible IPO as early as fall 2026 and could seek a valuation above $2 trillion. These were prospective plans and a potential valuation, not a completed public offering or confirmed market value. They do not provide a basis for calculating Amodei’s personal wealth.

Executive-compensation researcher Courtney Yu told Reuters that founder CEOs may rely on wealth from existing equity rather than take large annual compensation. Yu also said Amodei’s package “seems on the lower end for a company valued at $2 trillion,” while noting that it would be interesting to see how compensation changed after a public listing. The valuation in that comment was prospective, not an established value. Reuters report republished by AOL
