Reuters reported in April 2025 that Walmart reinstated a $6.99 minimum-basket fee for some grocery pickup and delivery orders under $35 tied to SNAP/EBT accounts and Walmart+ Assist. Walmart’s current Assist page still lists a $35 delivery order minimum, but it does not confirm that the $6.99 fee—or the same account rules—currently applies. Walmart also denied the fee was related to tariffs, according to PCMag.
What Walmart’s basket fee was, according to the 2025 report
On April 30, 2025, Reuters reported that Walmart confirmed reinstating a minimum-basket fee based on an internal customer-service memo. The report said the $6.99 charge applied when grocery pickup or delivery orders from a store totaled less than $35 for SNAP/EBT customers and Walmart+ Assist members. Reuters said the fee had previously been waived for SNAP customers. These details describe the reported 2025 policy; current fee applicability has not been confirmed by Walmart’s currently accessible Assist page.
Reuters quoted the internal memo as saying: “We’re reinstating minimum basket fees for customers with EBT cards saved to their Walmart account.” That was internal customer-service guidance quoted in Reuters’ reporting, not a public announcement establishing that every EBT shopper is charged.
How the basket fee differed from a delivery charge
Reuters described the minimum-basket fee as covering store picking and packing costs, separate from delivery charges. Its report said the fee could apply to an eligible order below $35 whether the customer chose pickup or delivery; delivery charges were separate. Walmart’s spokesperson was quoted by Reuters as saying: “Moving forward, the standard $35 minimum basket fee will be in place for all orders.” In context, Reuters described a $35 minimum-order threshold; the quote should not be read to mean every order incurred a fee.

Reuters also reported Walmart’s explanation that the earlier fee waiver had been introduced because of COVID-19 social-distancing restrictions. That is the company’s stated rationale in the report.
What is confirmed on Walmart’s current Assist page
Walmart’s Walmart+ Assist page, accessed October 5, 2026, lists the membership at $6.47 per month or $49 per year for customers who qualify for assistance programs including SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid. It advertises delivery on orders over $35 and states “$35 order minimum. Restrictions apply.” The page does not mention a $6.99 below-minimum fee or spell out which accounts, if any, currently incur one.

That published delivery minimum is not confirmation that the 2025 basket fee remains in force, nor that membership waives it. Because the public terms do not settle the fee’s current scope, check the order’s terms in Walmart checkout for your account and location before placing it.

PCMag reported on May 14, 2025, that a Walmart spokesperson told Mashable the reinstatement was not related to tariffs. This is an attributed company denial, not independent evidence of Walmart’s internal motive. The available reporting establishes the denial, but does not independently verify why Walmart made the policy change.

- For delivery, distinguish any minimum-basket charge from a separate delivery charge; Reuters described them as separate costs.
- Compare the actual final total for pickup and delivery, and do not add groceries you do not need solely to reach a threshold.
- If considering Walmart+ Assist, weigh its listed $6.47 monthly or $49 annual price against your expected use and the membership terms. The page lists a $35 delivery minimum and says restrictions apply; it does not establish that membership removes a basket fee.
