Later announcements identified a three-row Highlander BEV for production in Kentucky and assigned new Indiana funding to Grand Highlander capacity. Toyota has not explicitly said what happened to the original unnamed Indiana BEV plan.
What Toyota announced for Indiana in 2024
Toyota’s April 25, 2024 announcement committed a planned $1.4 billion investment to prepare its Princeton facility to assemble an all-new three-row battery-electric SUV. Toyota described new plant infrastructure and a battery-pack assembly line, with lithium-ion batteries to be supplied by Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina. Toyota’s announcement did not give the SUV a model name.
Toyota said the investment would add up to 340 jobs. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation said the company planned to create those jobs by the end of 2025; that was a target, not confirmation that all positions were ultimately filled. Toyota said the investment would bring its cumulative investment in Toyota Indiana to $8 billion, while the state agency described the resulting total as more than $8 billion. Those were figures tied to the 2024 announcement, not a current accounting of facility investment or proof of completed spending. The state agency’s account provides the job timing and its description of the total.
What Toyota announced later
The later announcements concern distinct vehicles and facilities. The Highlander BEV revealed in 2026 is not identified by Toyota as the unnamed vehicle in the 2024 Indiana announcement.

What is known about Indiana now
Toyota’s March 24, 2026 announcement allocated $200 million to Indiana for increased Grand Highlander production capacity. It allocated a separate $800 million to Kentucky for BEV preparation and increased Camry and RAV4 capacity. These figures describe the purposes Toyota assigned to the two investments; they do not establish that the projects are complete.
As of May 8, 2026, Toyota’s North American facility profile listed the Grand Highlander, Highlander, Sienna HEV, and Lexus TX at Indiana, but no BEV. The facility profile is a snapshot of listed production, not a statement that Toyota formally canceled the earlier proposal.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Did Toyota cancel or move the Indiana electric SUV?
The reviewed Toyota announcements do not explicitly say whether the unnamed 2024 Indiana BEV plan was canceled, moved, or otherwise revised. Toyota’s 2026 announcement of a Highlander BEV for Kentucky establishes that vehicle’s production location, but does not identify it as the Indiana proposal. The safest conclusion is that the 2024 Indiana plan’s formal disposition remains unstated in these announcements.

The 2024 Indiana plan included a battery-pack assembly line using lithium-ion batteries supplied by Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina. Toyota later reported that the North Carolina plant had officially begun production. In its November 13, 2025 announcement, Toyota described the facility as a nearly $14 billion investment with up to 5,100 jobs; those are Toyota’s stated facility investment and job figures. Toyota’s release also quoted Toyota Motor North America president and CEO Tetsuo Ogawa: “Today’s launch of Toyota’s first U.S. battery plant and additional U.S. investment up to $10 billion marks a pivotal moment in our company’s history.”
