Record-breaking prices for individual artworks show the strength of the market for Banksy’s work, not how much the artist personally earned or owns. A sale price can go to a seller other than the artist, and it says nothing by itself about debts, taxes, other assets, or income.
Is Banksy’s net worth known?
There is no independently verified personal net-worth figure for Banksy in the sources cited here. They do not provide a transparent method for calculating one or a balance sheet covering the artist’s assets, liabilities, earnings, taxes, or resale proceeds.

That distinction matters because net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. A headline auction result is a transaction involving one artwork; it is not a financial statement for its artist. Treat figures presented elsewhere as estimates, not established facts, unless they are supported by a disclosed method and relevant financial evidence.
What do Banksy’s artworks sell for?
Love is in the Bin
Sotheby’s reports that Love is in the Bin sold for $25.4 million on 14 October 2021. The Associated Press reported the contemporaneous equivalent as almost £18.6 million. The work is the partially shredded version of the balloon-girl image that made headlines after it self-destructed during an auction in 2018. These figures describe the artwork’s sale, not Banksy’s personal income. Sotheby’s Banksy artist page and the Sotheby’s lot record document the work and its market history.

Other market figures are not personal wealth figures
Sotheby’s reports an average compound annual return of 8.5% and says 76.5% of Banksy works increased in value, attributing both statistics to Sotheby’s Mei Moses. The artist page does not specify the measurement period alongside those figures, so they should be read as reported market statistics—not a forecast, a return available to every owner, or a measure of Banksy’s wealth.
A separate Sotheby’s market report covers 2018 through the first half of 2023. It reports an average auction-lot value of $5.1 million, along with 60.4% price confidence and 53.1% price momentum. For private sales in that period, Sotheby’s reports $33.3 million in sales across 17 lots, an average of $2 million per lot. These are figures about the transactions Sotheby’s reports, not all Banksy sales and not the artist’s proceeds. The report does not establish that Banksy owned the works when resold or received the money. See Sotheby’s Banksy market report for its period and figures.

Does Banksy earn money when a work is resold?
A resale price does not, by itself, tell you whether Banksy received any of the proceeds. In a secondary-market sale, the money is paid in connection with the transaction between seller and buyer; the sources cited here do not establish who received proceeds from the documented sales or what Banksy earned from them.
An artist’s earnings from creating or selling work, prints, merchandise, or other commercial activity are separate from later auction prices. Sotheby’s describes Banksy’s practice as including stencil-based street art, canvas works and prints, and branded merchandise, and identifies Exit Through the Gift Shop as a film Banksy directed. Those activities help explain the commercial reach of the name, but the cited sources do not disclose the artist’s revenue, ownership interests, or net proceeds from them.

What Banksy’s market success can tell you
High auction prices and Sotheby’s reported market statistics show that Banksy’s work has substantial market demand. They do not reveal the artist’s current personal balance sheet. The crucial missing information includes how much Banksy earned from primary sales and commercial projects, which assets the artist owns, what obligations or taxes apply, and whether any secondary-market proceeds went to the artist.
Identity reporting does not fill that gap. In March 2026, the Associated Press described debate after Reuters reported an apparent identification of Banksy; BBC coverage in May 2026 also described the claims as contested by people close to the artist. These are reported claims, not a definitive confirmation by Banksy in the cited coverage, and they provide no evidence of personal net worth. AP also reported one London gallery director’s view that buyers may care more about the art than knowing the artist’s identity; that observation is not a survey of buyers. The Associated Press’s March 2026 report and the BBC’s May 2026 coverage discuss the dispute.
