For a small quantity, use blank barrier pouches with labels; for graphics printed directly on the bag, work with a flexible-pouch converter. In either case, get the supplier’s current dieline, approve a proof, and inspect a physical sample before committing to a large order.
What “Mylar bag” means when you customize packaging
Mylar is a trademarked name used by Mylar Specialty Films. The company describes heat-sealable polyester film families used in packaging, but a pouch colloquially called a “Mylar bag” may be made from several layers. The name alone does not identify its layer structure, sealing layer, barrier performance, or suitability for food contact.

Choose between labels and direct printing

For a small quantity, a practical route is to buy blank resealable barrier pouches and apply labels. Search for blank resealable Mylar-style or foil barrier pouches, then test the intended label on the actual pouch before making a batch. Adhesion can depend on the pouch surface and storage conditions, so do not assume a label will hold on every laminate.

Artwork printed on the pouch
For full-surface or repeatable graphics integrated into the package, contact a flexible-pouch converter. Ask which printing processes suit your quantity and design. One supplier, Honghai, lists digital and gravure printing, but that is a supplier-stated capability, not a universal recommendation about cost, quality, or minimum order size. How to plan and order a custom pouch
- Describe the product and use. Tell the supplier what the bag will contain, its approximate fill weight or volume, whether it is dry, oily, powdered, liquid, or otherwise specialized, how it will be filled and sealed, and where it will be sold. These details affect material choice and any applicable regulatory information.
- Select the format and dimensions. Common formats include stand-up, flat-bottom, and three-side-seal pouches. Specify width, height, gusset, intended fill, and display needs. Do not select a pouch solely by an advertised nominal capacity; confirm its fit with the product and filling process.
- Choose the material structure. Ask what each layer does and request relevant performance data for the exact structure, including oxygen or moisture barrier, light protection, seal performance, or puncture resistance as needed. A supplier’s general material description does not independently establish how a particular pouch will perform.
- Specify closures and features. Options may include a resealable zipper or heat-seal closure, tear notches, hang holes, clear windows, tamper-evident features, or child-resistant closures. Confirm compatibility with your filling and sealing process and with rules in the sales market.
- Set the print and finish requirements. Ask which print method, number of colors, color-matching process, surface finish, special effects, and design variations the supplier supports. Honghai lists matte, glossy, metallic, and holographic finishes; confirm the actual specification and price for your order.
- Get the current dieline before making artwork. Use the converter’s template, not a generic pouch outline. Keep important text and marks clear of seals, folds, zippers, gussets, and cut lines, and leave room for required product or regulatory details. Confirm the accepted file format, resolution, bleed, color profile, and revision limits with that supplier; there is no universal artwork tolerance established here.
- Review the proof and request a sample. Check spelling, colors, dimensions, panel placement, closure position, barcode or QR-code readability, and required text on the proof. Ask for a physical sample made with the proposed structure and finish before approving a large run.
- Confirm all order terms in writing. Compare the total delivered cost, minimum order quantity (MOQ) per design and size, setup or tooling fees, sample charges, production and shipping times, defect or remake terms, and color controls for reorders. Supplier terms vary and can change, so request current written terms rather than treating a published MOQ or lead time as a market standard.
Food contact and regulated products
Do not treat “Mylar,” “food grade,” or a generic supplier claim as proof that a particular pouch is suitable for every food, temperature, or duration. For other regulated products, check current requirements in the jurisdiction where the package will be sold. A supplier’s offer of a feature such as a child-resistant closure does not by itself establish that the finished package complies with requirements for a particular product or market. Obtain applicable test evidence and have required warnings and information reviewed.
