Elon Musk said in a March 2025 Fox News interview that “legitimate recipients of Social Security will receive more money” as a result of DOGE’s work. That was a prediction, not proof of a DOGE-caused benefit increase: the available sources do not establish or quantify an increase in individual benefits attributable to DOGE.
What Musk promised—and what the record establishes
In the interview, Musk said: “Legitimate people as a result of the work of DOGE will receive more Social Security, not less.” The statement describes what he expected DOGE’s work to accomplish; it does not document that DOGE raised benefit amounts. Read the interview transcript.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) said on February 19, 2025, that DOGE personnel working at the agency had read-only access and “CANNOT make changes to agency systems, benefit payments, or other information.” That statement describes access at that point in time, not necessarily later activity. It also does not establish that DOGE caused a later increase.
Why some Social Security payments increased
Social Security Fairness Act adjustments
The Social Security Fairness Act, signed on January 5, 2025, repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). Those provisions had reduced or eliminated Social Security benefits for some people who also received pensions based on work not covered by Social Security. Potentially affected groups include some teachers, firefighters, police officers, federal employees covered by the Civil Service Retirement System, and people with work covered by a foreign social security system. These increases resulted from legislation, not a documented DOGE action. SSA’s Fairness Act information.
#1 Best Overall
SSA reported that by July 7, 2025, it had completed more than 3.1 million payments totaling $17 billion under the law, five months ahead of schedule. The adjustment differs by person: it depends on benefit type and pension amount, and some increases may be small while others may exceed $1,000 per month. Those figures do not mean every eligible person received the same amount.
2026 cost-of-living adjustment
SSA announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients in 2026. It is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) between the third quarters of 2024 and 2025. A COLA is an annual inflation adjustment, not evidence that DOGE increased benefits. SSA’s 2026 COLA fact sheet.
How to identify why your payment changed
A higher deposit can reflect different changes, and the cause matters: a Fairness Act adjustment may affect people whose benefits were reduced under WEP or GPO; a COLA is an annual adjustment; other individual entitlement changes can also affect a payment. A retroactive payment is different from a recurring change to the monthly benefit.
- Check your SSA notices. SSA said people affected by the Fairness Act would receive a mailed notice explaining their adjustment.
- Compare the amounts and dates. Look for whether the change is a one-time retroactive payment, a new recurring monthly amount, or both.
- Check whether WEP or GPO applied to you. The Fairness Act adjustment is relevant if you had a pension based on work not covered by Social Security and your benefit was reduced or eliminated under one of those provisions.
- Use your benefit notice to confirm the reason. The amount depends on individual circumstances; the broad payment totals and maximum examples do not determine your personal increase.
What DOGE-related Social Security records do not prove
In February 2025, SSA addressed records for people older than 100 who had no recorded date of death. The agency said those records did not necessarily represent current benefit recipients. An age-record count should therefore not be treated as a count of active payments, or as evidence that removing records increased legitimate recipients’ checks. SSA’s February 2025 statement.
The evidence supports two distinct conclusions: Musk publicly predicted that DOGE would lead legitimate recipients to receive more, and SSA described specific benefit increases arising from the Fairness Act and the 2026 COLA. It does not provide an audited causal estimate of any increase produced by DOGE itself.
