What the automakers did—and where the vehicles were
A shipment pause and a port hold affect different points in the supply chain. A pause stops or delays vehicles before they reach U.S. buyers; a hold keeps vehicles that have already arrived from moving onward while a company waits for direction. The distinction matters: reports about cars waiting at a U.S. port do not, by themselves, mean exports to the United States have stopped.

Why tariffs prompted shipment decisions
The reports described a newly implemented 25% U.S. import tariff on vehicles, with EE Times also referring to tariffs on parts. That percentage is historical context for the 2025 announcements, not a statement of the tariff schedule in effect today. A tariff can raise the landed cost of covered imports. In response, a company may delay a shipment, keep a vehicle at port while seeking clarification, adjust inventory or pricing, or take another supply-chain step. The cited reports establish some announced actions and concerns; they do not show how much of any tariff was passed on to customers.
JLR said the United States was important to its luxury brands and described the April pause as a short-term step while it addressed new trading terms with business partners and developed longer-term plans. The AP story also reported that U.K. vehicle exports to the United States had risen year over year by 38.5% in December, 12.4% in January, and 34.6% in February, citing Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures. It reported U.K. government statistics showing £8.3 billion ($10.7 billion) in British vehicle shipments to the United States in the 12 months through September; the story described vehicles as the U.K.’s largest goods export to the U.S. These figures gave context for the importance of the U.S. market and the inventory built ahead of the tariff increase; they are not current trade totals. What industry leaders warned about
Before implementation, John Bozzella, president of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, warned that planned tariffs could raise costs for U.S. consumers, reduce domestic vehicle sales, and reduce auto exports. Those were forecasts, not measured outcomes established by the cited reporting. Reuters reported his statement on March 28, 2025: “Additional tariffs will increase costs on American consumers, lower the total number of vehicles sold inside the U.S. and reduce U.S. auto exports – all before any new manufacturing or jobs are created in this country.” Bozzella also said that manufacturing and supply chains could not be redirected overnight. Ford’s May 2025 figures illustrate why estimates should not be mistaken for final costs. Reuters reported management estimates of $1.5 billion in adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) tariff costs and $2.5 billion in total tariff costs for Ford in 2025. The story also cited an estimate of more than $100 billion in expected U.S. automaker costs during 2025. These were estimates at the time, not realized audited totals or tariff revenue. What is known about the pauses now
The cited reports establish announcements and actions in 2025, but do not verify whether Audi’s or Mitsubishi’s port measures continued, ended, or changed after their 2025 coverage, or whether JLR’s announced April pause was extended. They therefore do not support describing any of these measures as ongoing—or definitively over—as of October 5, 2026. A current status claim would require newer company-specific evidence.
