The standout single-token Bored Ape sale documented by Sotheby’s was BAYC #8817, which sold in 2021 for about $3.4 million. Contemporaneous reporting put the price at $3.408 million. That is a historic auction result—not a reliable statement of what the NFT is worth today or proof of a current all-time record.
Which Bored Ape sold for about $3.4 million?
BAYC #8817 is the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT behind the widely cited 2021 sale. Sotheby’s later called the roughly $3.4 million result “a record for a single Bored Ape” in its 2021 year-in-review. Contemporaneous coverage by Decrypt reported the more precise figure of $3.408 million for #8817’s Sotheby’s sale: Decrypt’s October 2021 report.
The distinction between “a 2021 record” and “the most expensive ever” matters. These sources establish the sale and Sotheby’s description at that time; they do not establish a complete, current ranking of every later single-token sale. The careful answer is that #8817 is the documented 2021 record, not that it is definitively the all-time leader today.
Why a $24 million-plus auction headline can be misleading
A headline price can describe a lot of multiple NFTs rather than one Bored Ape. In September 2021, Sotheby’s listed a separate “Ape in!” lot containing 101 Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs. When comparing NFT prices, first check what was sold: one token, a bundle, or another collection. Sotheby’s auction pages also note that results may include buyer’s premiums and exclude applicable taxes or other costs, so the headline result may not equal a buyer’s total outlay.
What makes a Bored Ape valuable?
There is no objective price score printed on a BAYC token. Its market price is the outcome of a particular buyer and seller meeting at a particular time. BAYC has 10,000 unique apes, which Sotheby’s describes as varying in rarity, but rarity alone is not a dependable dollar valuation formula. A rare trait may attract collector interest; the sources do not establish a specific premium for any trait.

Traits and rarity
Each ape’s combination of visual traits contributes to its distinctiveness. To assess a comparison, verify the actual traits and provenance rather than assuming that a rarity ranking translates into a fixed price. A trait’s scarcity does not guarantee that a buyer will pay more for it.
Community and membership positioning
BAYC has been positioned as more than a set of images. Sotheby’s catalogue describes the NFTs as social-media avatars and membership passes, while the official BAYC site emphasizes its members, clubhouse, and activations. Those attributes can shape demand, but they do not guarantee continued access, resale interest, or future value.

A useful comparable is a completed sale of a similar asset, not an estimate presented as though it were a realized price. Record the date, venue, currency, number of tokens, and whether the stated result includes a buyer’s premium. A high auction result describes that transaction; it does not establish a lasting market price or prove that the asset can be resold quickly.
What does a BAYC owner actually own?
The NFT and the artwork’s use rights are related but not identical. The official BAYC License says each Bored Ape is an NFT on Ethereum and describes ownership as mediated by the smart contract and network. It grants a compliant owner a worldwide license to use, copy, and display the purchased art for derivative works, including merchandise. The grant is conditional on the license terms and does not transfer other Yuga Labs intellectual-property rights. Buying an NFT should not be described as buying all BAYC intellectual property.

The license also places responsibility for private-wallet safety on users and warns that transactions cannot be undone or reversed through the site. Anyone evaluating an NFT should verify token provenance and read the current license terms rather than relying on a general description of ownership.

- Identify the unit. Confirm whether the result is for one BAYC token or a multi-NFT lot.
- Check the transaction. Note the sale date, venue, currency, and whether the reported result includes a buyer’s premium or excludes costs such as taxes.
- Verify the asset. Confirm the token identifier, provenance, and traits. Do not infer a dollar premium from rarity alone.
- Consider what came with ownership. Check the license and any collection utility available to the holder at the time; do not assume either is permanent.
- Separate history from today’s value. A past sale is evidence of one transaction, not a current appraisal, guaranteed liquidity, or a valuation formula.
What Sotheby’s 2021 NFT figures do—and do not—mean
Sotheby’s reported nearly $100 million in NFT sales in its 2021 year-in-review, and said 78% of its NFT bidders were new to the auction house. Those are Sotheby’s own business figures, not totals or buyer statistics for the NFT market as a whole. They help explain the auction-house context of the #8817 sale but do not tell you what a Bored Ape should sell for now.
