Tesla Opened Cybertruck Trade-Ins: What the Reported Offers Actually Show

Two Cybertruck owners reported Tesla trade-in quotes well below their purchase prices in 2025. The cases are anecdotes, not a current or universal depreciation rate.

Tesla was accepting Cybertruck trade-ins by May 2025, when two owners told TechCrunch they had received offers far below the amounts they said they paid. One 2024 AWD owner reported a $63,100 quote after buying for $100,000 and driving 19,623 miles; a Cyberbeast owner reported $78,200 after paying $127,000 roughly eight months earlier. Those are striking individual examples—not a representative depreciation rate or a current quote for your truck.

What Tesla reportedly offered Cybertruck owners

In a May 25, 2025 report, TechCrunch described two owner-reported Tesla trade-in offers. The implied losses below use the purchase amounts and quotes in that report; they are not independently established resale losses.

Truck and owner-reported purchase Reported Tesla offer What the report said
2024 AWD Cybertruck bought for $100,000; 19,623 miles $63,100 TechCrunch characterized the difference as 37% depreciation.
Cyberbeast bought for $127,000 the previous September; offer received about eight months later $78,200 TechCrunch characterized the difference as a 38% loss.

TechCrunch also reported that CarGurus had recently shown Cybertruck depreciation of up to 45%. That is a figure relayed by TechCrunch, not a Tesla offer or a representative trade-in rate.

Each figure describes a particular reported case. The report does not establish what other owners received, how Tesla would value those trucks after inspection, or what the same vehicles are worth now.

There is no single established Cybertruck depreciation rate

The available figures are not directly interchangeable: the two Tesla quotes are individual reports from 2025, while third-party sites publish estimates tied to vehicle assumptions, location, and date. The cited material does not establish a representative market-wide Cybertruck trade-in depreciation percentage.

Edmunds estimate for a 2025 Cybertruck

Edmunds’ 2025 Cybertruck value page, accessed October 5, 2026, estimated $64,434 for trade-in and $66,261 for a private-party sale for a no-option truck in clean condition driven roughly 12,000 miles per year. Its broader used-value range was $60,803 to $106,408, depending on condition, mileage, and options. These are Edmunds estimates, not Tesla offers. See Edmunds’ 2025 Cybertruck value estimates.

Kelley Blue Book estimate for a 2025 Cyberbeast

Kelley Blue Book’s page for a 2025 Cybertruck Cyberbeast in ZIP code 23917 showed estimated trade-in values of about $69,700–$81,900 and private-party values of about $77,100–$90,500, depending on condition. The estimates were stated as valid through October 2, 2026. KBB also estimated $16,435, or 16%, in depreciation over the previous year for that trim and location, while warning that estimates are not guarantees. These dated estimates are not directly comparable with the owners’ reported Tesla quotes. See Kelley Blue Book’s Cyberbeast estimates.

Why a trade-in estimate differs from a private-party value

A trade-in value estimates what a dealer might offer for the vehicle; a private-party estimate concerns a sale directly to another buyer. The figures answer different questions, so comparing one with the other can make a valuation look better or worse without showing what Tesla would actually offer.

Even within one category, a useful comparison needs to match the truck’s model year and trim, mileage, condition and history, options or modifications, location, and valuation date. Edmunds and KBB each provide separate trade-in and private-party estimates, and KBB’s figures are location-specific.

How Tesla determines a trade-in offer

Tesla’s U.S. Trade-Ins guidance says it accepts passenger cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs toward a new or Certified Pre-Owned Tesla purchase. For Tesla vehicles, the company says: “Trade-in values for Tesla vehicles are determined based on vehicle configuration, history, mileage and age.” Tesla also considers owner-provided information, market data, and its internal product knowledge. Read Tesla’s U.S. trade-in guidance.

The online process starts with vehicle details submitted through a Tesla Account. Tesla may request photos and documents, and the final offer is subject to physical inspection. Reported damage, mechanical issues, and modifications are accounted for at the final-offer stage rather than in the initial estimate.

  • Tesla says offers reflect current market conditions, are not negotiable, and will not be matched to competing offers.
  • A final offer expires after 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • For Tesla trade-ins, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is included in the value only if it has not been transferred to the new vehicle.
  • Tesla says aftermarket modifications typically hurt trade-in value and that stock condition is best.

How to judge an offer for your Cybertruck

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record model year, trim, mileage, options, modifications, condition, and relevant history.
  2. Get current estimates for the same configuration. Use the same ZIP code where applicable, and distinguish trade-in estimates from private-party estimates.
  3. Request Tesla’s valuation through your Tesla Account. Submit accurate details and any photos or documents Tesla requests.
  4. Compare like with like. Note each estimate’s date and assumptions, then compare Tesla’s final inspected offer with dealer trade-in estimates—not with a private-sale number as if they were equivalent.
  5. Recheck if circumstances change. Tesla’s final offer has a limited validity window, and mileage or market changes can affect what a later valuation shows.

The 2025 owner reports show that steep gaps between purchase price and a trade-in quote were possible in those cases. They do not say what a particular Cybertruck should fetch today; Tesla’s offer and third-party estimates depend on the individual vehicle and the valuation date.
