When and How Much to Tip in Italy: A Practical Guide for Travelers

Tipping in Italy is generally optional, not a fixed percentage. Check for servizio before adding anything; coperto is a separate cover charge, and taxi tips are not routine.

Tipping in Italy is generally optional, and there is no nationally required restaurant percentage established by the available guidance. Before leaving anything extra, check the bill for servizio (a service charge); coperto is a separate cover or table charge, not a tip. If no service charge is listed and you received particularly good service, rounding up or leaving a few euros is a reasonable discretionary gesture. Taxi tips are not routine; rounding up is optional.

How much should you tip in Italy?

Use the bill and the situation rather than applying a U.S.-style percentage automatically. The travel guidance available does not establish one national amount or percentage that customers are expected to leave. Treat any amount as a voluntary gesture, not an obligation.

  • At a restaurant: Check for a service charge first. If none is listed and you want to recognize especially good service, round up the total or leave a few euros.
  • In a taxi: A tip is not routine. You can pay the fare as shown or round up and leave the change.
  • For other services: A small gratuity may be offered for particularly helpful assistance, but the sources do not establish a standard national amount for hotel staff, café visits, or tour guides.

Travel guides give differing suggested amounts, which is a reason to treat examples as personal choices rather than customary rates. No attributable survey statistic or reliable national average tip amount is established in the cited material.

How to read an Italian restaurant bill

Coperto is a cover charge, not a tip

Coperto is a venue-specific cover or table charge, commonly associated with the place setting and bread. It may appear as a per-person charge on the bill. It is distinct from a gratuity, so paying it does not mean you have tipped your server.

Servizio is a service charge

Look for servizio or servizio incluso on the menu or receipt. If a service charge is shown or described as included, consider that before deciding whether to leave anything extra. Restaurants do not all handle charges the same way, and the presence of a charge alone does not establish how it is distributed to workers.

Conto means the bill

Conto is the Italian word for the bill or check. You can use it when asking to pay, but it does not indicate whether a service charge or tip is included; check the itemized bill.

Tipping by situation

Situation Practical approach What to check
Restaurant Optional. If service was particularly good and no service charge applies, round up or leave a few euros. Look for servizio or servizio incluso.
Café or bar Keep any gratuity modest and optional; no universal amount is established. Check the bill or posted charges, especially for seated service.
Taxi No routine tip is expected; rounding up or leaving change is optional. Pay the fare shown; consider extra only if you choose to.
Tour guide A tip is discretionary, particularly if the guide was especially helpful; no single nationwide amount is established. Consider the service and any terms published by the tour operator.
Hotel staff A small gratuity is discretionary for especially helpful assistance; no well-supported national amount is established. Consider the assistance and any property policy or included charge.

Does Italian law require customers to tip?

The available sources do not establish a customer obligation or a required restaurant tip percentage. A separate tax question concerns workers who receive tips: on July 11, 2025, Italy’s Ministry of Tourism reported that preferential tax treatment for tips applies to workers in accommodation businesses and food-and-beverage establishments, including workers not directly employed by those businesses. That announcement concerns the tax treatment of tips received by workers; it does not set a customer tipping duty or customary amount. See the Ministry of Tourism announcement.

A simple rule for deciding

  1. Read the menu and bill for coperto, servizio, or servizio incluso.
  2. Do not count coperto as a gratuity; it is a separate cover or table charge.
  3. If a service charge is included or itemized, take it into account before adding anything voluntarily.
  4. If no service charge applies and you want to reward particularly good service, round up or leave a few euros at a restaurant. For taxis and other services, any extra is optional rather than routine.

The Italian Ministry of Tourism identifies tourist guides as a distinct professional service, and reports that the implementing regulation for the profession was published in the Official Journal on June 28, 2024. This describes the profession, not a tip requirement. Read the Ministry’s tourist-guide information.

Sources and scope

Practical etiquette guidance draws on Italy Taxi Service’s 2026 traveler guide, Italy Tourism’s guide to cash, cards, and tipping, updated August 25, 2026, Italo’s 2026 etiquette guide, and Overseas Adventure Travel’s 2026 Italy planning guide. These are travel sources, not binding rules; charges and practices can vary by venue. The Ministry sources linked above address worker tax treatment and tourist-guide regulation rather than customary tipping amounts.
