The best fit depends on which aircraft operates your flight and whether you value legroom, seat width, recline or privacy most.
These five picks compare airline-published specifications, not independently tested comfort. Measurements apply only to the aircraft and configuration named; check the aircraft and seat map for your specific flight before booking.
How to compare Premium Economy seat space
Pitch measures seat spacing, not seat width
Seat pitch is the distance between the same point on one seat and the seat in front of it, as Air New Zealand explains. It is not the amount of unobstructed legroom you are guaranteed, and it tells you nothing about how wide the seat is. Compare pitch and width as separate measurements.
Aircraft and configuration matter
An airline can offer different dimensions on different aircraft or cabin layouts. The figures below are tied to the named aircraft and configuration, rather than being fleet-wide promises. Airlines may also change aircraft or seating, so verify the itinerary’s aircraft and current seat map before you pay or select a seat.

Five spacious Premium Economy seats to consider
1. Air New Zealand 777-300 or 787-9 V4: most pitch
Air New Zealand’s cited seat maps list 41–42 inches of pitch for Premium Economy on both the Boeing 777-300 and Boeing 787-9 V4. Its new 787 cabin page describes a 41-inch pitch, a fixed outer shell designed so reclining does not affect the passenger behind, and a winged headrest. The airline is introducing the new experience by aircraft and route; check which cabin is assigned to your flight. The cited pages do not state a seat-width measurement. 2. Qantas A380: widest published seat in this shortlist
Qantas lists its A380 Premium Economy in a 2-3-2 layout, with 38 inches of pitch and a 22.8-inch seat width. That is the widest published width among the five airlines compared here. Do not apply it to other Qantas aircraft: the airline lists 18.7 inches of width on its A330 Premium Economy, also at 38 inches of pitch. A380 service depends on the route. 3. Virgin Atlantic 787-9: wide seat and substantial pitch
Virgin Atlantic lists up to 21 inches of seat width, up to 38 inches of pitch and up to 8 inches of recline for Premium on the Boeing 787-9. Width varies by aircraft: the airline lists 18.5 inches for Premium seats on the A330neo and A350-1000. 4. Emirates A350: privacy-focused design
In an announcement dated 3 September 2026, Emirates said its new A350 Premium Economy seat is 20 inches wide with up to 39 inches of pitch. The airline describes a full-height adjustable privacy divider and a cradle recline intended not to intrude on the row behind. These specifications apply to the new cabin on newly received A350s, not automatically to every Emirates flight; confirm the aircraft and seat product on your itinerary. 5. ANA 787-9, 206-seat configuration: pitch plus recline
For its 206-seat Boeing 787-9 configuration, ANA lists 40 inches of pitch and 9 inches of recline, with adjustable wing panels in the headrest. Those figures should not be mixed with ANA’s separate 246/215-seat 787-9 page, which lists 38 inches of pitch and 19.3 inches of width. A useful additional comparison: Singapore Airlines from Japan
Singapore Airlines lists 38 inches of pitch and up to 20 inches of width, plus enhanced recline, for Premium Economy on flights from Japan. The cited page scopes the figures to those flights but does not establish an aircraft-specific range there, so treat them as a route-scoped reference rather than a universal specification. Which seat should you choose?
- For the most published pitch: start with Air New Zealand’s cited 777-300 and 787-9 V4 seat maps.
- For the widest published seat: the Qantas A380 leads this five-airline comparison at 22.8 inches; confirm the A380 is scheduled for your route.
- For a balance of width and recline: Virgin’s 787-9 offers up to 21 inches of width and up to 8 inches of recline, while Emirates’ new A350 seat combines a 20-inch width with privacy-focused design.
- For a seat with a specified recline measurement: ANA’s cited 206-seat 787-9 configuration lists 9 inches of recline; check that exact configuration.
Published dimensions cannot settle every comfort question. The sources do not consistently compare aisle access, armrest shape, seat location or how well a seat suits a particular traveler. Those details—and the aircraft actually assigned—can affect your choice as much as a headline pitch figure.
