The right way to change banking information with the IRS depends on whether you mean a refund, an installment-plan debit, or a one-time payment. For most filed refunds, you cannot change the account after the IRS posts your return. If the IRS issued you a CP53E notice, update refund details through your IRS Online Account. For an installment agreement or scheduled Direct Pay payment, use that payment’s separate process.
Find the IRS process for your transaction

Refund direct deposit sends money from the IRS to you. Direct Pay and installment-plan debits send money from your bank account to the IRS; they cannot redirect a refund.
Change refund account details after filing
If the IRS has posted your return and has not issued a CP53E notice, it says you cannot change the refund bank account. An IRS employee cannot reroute the refund or update those details by phone. The IRS Online Account shows whether a CP53E notice has been issued. IRS refund inquiries
If you received a CP53E notice
The notice gives you 30 days to add or update an account or select an applicable exception for a paper check. The IRS allows one opportunity to add or update the account. It must belong to you or be a joint account shared with you.

- Sign in to or create your IRS Online Account.
- On Account Home, check Notifications for the CP53E notice.
- Select the “Add bank account” notification. It appears only after the IRS has issued the notice.
- Follow the prompts to enter the bank details or select an applicable exception for a paper check.
- Allow about 2–5 business days for the refund status to update in your account.
If the account details are not accepted, the IRS says it will issue a paper check. If you do not respond to the notice, it says it will issue one after six weeks. IRS: Understanding your CP53E notice
Protect your bank information
The IRS says it contacts taxpayers about this process by U.S. mail, not by phone or text asking for account details. Do not give banking information to an inbound caller or in response to a text claiming to update your refund. IRS: Questions and answers about Executive Order 14247

Change the account for an installment-plan debit
For a Direct Debit installment agreement, sign in to your IRS Online Account and open the payment-plan options. Revise the plan, enter the new routing and account numbers, then submit the changes. This is a payment-plan update, not a refund-account change. IRS payment plans; installment agreements
If you cannot revise the plan online or are not eligible to do so, the IRS directs individuals to call 800-829-1040 and businesses to call 800-829-4933, or to follow the instructions on an IRS notice. If a notice says your plan has defaulted or needs urgent action, follow its directions promptly.

Change or cancel a scheduled Direct Pay transaction
Direct Pay is for sending a bank-account payment to the IRS, not for changing where a refund is deposited. If your payment is scheduled, you can change or cancel it within two days of its scheduled payment date. Enter the intended bank details when you file the return, and check the account information before submitting. The IRS says the joint-return refund may be deposited to an account belonging to the taxpayer, the spouse, or both jointly. IRS refund inquiries
