MadeGood Granola Bar Recall: What FDA’s Record Confirms and How to Check Your Package

The FDA-hosted notice confirms that Riverside Natural Foods announced a voluntary recall of specified MadeGood granola bar batches on December 9, 2024, over the potential presence of a piece of metal. The FDA page does not confirm that the recall was classified as Class II or that it involved 2.4 million bars, so those claims should not be treated as established by that record. If you have a package, check its product name, UPC and best-before date against the official recall list before deciding whether it is affected.

What the FDA notice does—and does not—confirm

Riverside Natural Foods announced the voluntary recall on December 9, 2024. The FDA published the company’s announcement on December 10, 2024, as a public service; FDA says these pages are company announcements and do not represent FDA endorsement of a product or company. The notice identifies the possible presence of a piece of metal as the concern. Read the FDA-hosted announcement.

That FDA page does not establish a Class II classification or a quantity of 2.4 million. The available official notice supports the original voluntary recall, but not those two headline details. A secondary enforcement-data summary is not sufficient confirmation: it labels the event Class II while disclaiming that its severity mapping is editorial interpretation, rather than an official FDA classification.

Which MadeGood products were included

The recall covers specified batches—not every MadeGood product—of eight granola bar families produced between January and November 2024 and distributed in Canada, the United States and other international markets:

Use the MadeGood recall page or FDA-hosted notice to compare the full product details, UPCs and best-before dates. A brand name or similar-looking package alone does not determine whether an item is on the list.

MadeGood’s support notice says Soft Baked Morning Bars, Granola Bites, Crackers, Crispy Squares, Soft Baked Cookie Bites and Crunchy Cookies were not included in this 2024 granola bar recall. That statement is limited to this recall; it is not a blanket assurance about all MadeGood products or later notices. See MadeGood’s support notice.

How to check your package and get a refund

  1. Identify the product family. Confirm that the package is one of the eight granola bar types named in the recall.
  2. Compare the UPC and best-before date. Check both against the official recall list, rather than relying on the product name alone. The FDA-hosted announcement notes that a “Z” after a best-before date means that item is excluded from the recall list.
  3. If all details match, return the product. MadeGood says consumers with an affected package should return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

For readers outside the United States, use the notice and product details for the applicable country. The Government of Canada notice lists Canadian product and best-before details.

What is known about the safety concern

The stated hazard was the potential presence of a piece of metal. The company announcement and MadeGood’s recall page reported no injuries at the time of the announcement; that dated statement does not establish whether any later reports occurred. Riverside said it identified the source in its manufacturing process, remediated it and tested new processes. Those are the company’s claims, not independent FDA findings.

How to interpret the “2.4 million” and “Class II” claims

Do not repeat the 2.4 million figure as a count of individual bars based on the FDA-hosted announcement: it gives no such quantity. If an authoritative record elsewhere supports a count, its reporting unit matters—cases, packages and individual bars are not interchangeable. Likewise, a Class II label should be attributed to an official FDA classification record before being presented as FDA’s determination. The FDA page cited here does not provide that classification.
