Southwest is keeping assigned seating, which began on January 27, 2026. After customers raised concerns about overhead-bin access, family seating and the new boarding experience, the airline announced refinements to boarding-group assignments and signage for bins above Extra Legroom rows. The available announcements describe adjustments—not a return to open seating—and do not establish that every refinement had been implemented by October 5, 2026.

What changed when Southwest ended open seating?

Southwest began using assigned seats and boarding groups on flights on January 27, 2026. The former open-seating process is no longer the basis for choosing where to sit: travelers receive or select a specific seat, with seat type and timing depending on the fare, availability and applicable customer benefits. Southwest’s current assigned-seating guidance is the place to check the rules for a particular booking.

The Associated Press described the new process as having eight boarding groups. Group placement is connected to factors including seat location, fare, loyalty status and credit-card benefits; its report said Extra Legroom customers were placed in groups 1–2 and Basic-fare customers were likely to be in groups 6–8. Those descriptions should not be treated as a guaranteed assignment for every itinerary: consult Southwest’s current guidance and the boarding information on your reservation. The AP’s overview of the transition provides the reported group context.

What is Southwest changing after customer feedback?

In a customer email dated February 27, 2026, Tony Roach, Southwest’s executive vice president and chief customer and brand officer, said: “As we’ve transitioned from open seating to assigned seating, the feedback we’ve received has been invaluable.” The email announced that Southwest was refining boarding-group assignments to improve overhead-bin availability near passengers’ seats and adding signage for bins above Extra Legroom rows. The reproduced customer email documents the announcement.

The announcement describes intended changes, not a verified final implementation. The available reporting does not establish which boarding-group refinements or signs were in place by October 5, 2026, nor does it provide a complete revised group-assignment chart. Check Southwest’s current boarding information before relying on a specific group rule.

What complaints prompted the response?

Post-launch coverage reported customer concerns about finding overhead-bin space near assigned seats, families being seated apart, and difficulties with the changed boarding experience. These reports establish that some travelers complained; they do not show that all customers opposed assigned seating or that complaints alone caused Southwest to make its original policy change. The airline framed its later action as a refinement informed by feedback.

How does seat assignment depend on fare and benefits?

Southwest’s seat options include Standard, Preferred and Extra Legroom locations. What a traveler can select, and when, depends on fare, seat availability and applicable benefits. Under Southwest’s guidance, Basic-fare customers generally receive an assignment at check-in, subject to stated exceptions. Travelers with other fare or benefit eligibility may have an opportunity to select earlier. Review the conditions for the exact ticket rather than assuming every passenger can choose a seat at the same time. Southwest’s assigned-seating page has current booking details.

When comparing options, look at four things together: seat location and legroom, when selection is available, the fare or benefit required, and the boarding group associated with the choice. Exact seat prices and benefits depend on current booking terms; they are not fixed by the general transition announcement.

Why did Southwest introduce assigned seats?

Southwest said in its 2024 investor-day announcement that assigned seating was intended to broaden customer appeal and increase demand, while premium seating would give customers choices such as extra legroom. The company cited its own research stating that 80% of Southwest customers and 86% of passengers who choose other airlines wanted assigned seats. Southwest’s 2024 announcement reports those figures; it does not provide the survey methodology, sample size or field dates, so the percentages should be understood as company-reported research rather than independently verified results.

Did Southwest reverse assigned seating?

No reversal is established by the available announcements. Southwest moved to assigned seats in January 2026 and later said it would adjust boarding-group assignments and add overhead-bin signage after receiving feedback. Those are operational refinements within the assigned-seating system, not evidence that Southwest is restoring open seating.
