Historical snapshot for January 16, 2025: Yahoo Finance reported Synchrony’s 13-month CD at 4.35% APY, with no minimum opening deposit, as the highest rate in its reviewed partner table. That was the top offer reported in that table—not a verified survey of every U.S. bank, credit union, brokerage, or applicant’s eligibility—and it is not a current offer.
What was the best CD rate on January 16, 2025?
Yahoo Finance’s January 16, 2025 rate report listed Synchrony’s 13-month CD at 4.35% APY, with no minimum opening deposit, as the highest offer among the partners it reviewed. The report does not establish that this was the highest rate available from every institution or to every saver that day. See the Yahoo Finance report.
Because this is a dated rate snapshot, the 4.35% APY should not be treated as an offer available now. Account terms and availability can change; confirm current details with the institution before applying.
How did the reported rate compare with national averages?
The FDIC’s January 2025 national rate table lists a 1.82% national rate for a 12-month CD. The table was revised on January 21, 2025—five days after the January 16 article date—so it is a nearby monthly benchmark, not a measurement of the market on January 16. It is also an average, not a best-offer rate.

The FDIC defines a national rate as an average of rates paid by insured depository institutions and credit unions for which data is available, weighted by each institution’s share of domestic deposits. Its reported CD averages represent $10,000 and $100,000 product tiers. The FDIC January 2025 table and methodology explain the figures and their scope.

What should you compare when choosing a CD?
APY is important, but it does not tell you whether an account fits your needs. Compare the full terms rather than choosing by rate alone:
- Term: Check how long the money will be committed and whether the maturity date fits your plans.
- Minimum deposit: Confirm the opening amount required; the reported Synchrony offer had no minimum opening deposit, according to Yahoo Finance’s January 16 article.
- Early-withdrawal penalty: Find out what you could forfeit if you need to access funds before maturity.
- Fees and eligibility: Review account fees and any location or applicant requirements that may limit access.
For any offer you are considering now, verify the current APY and all account conditions directly with the bank or credit union. The historical Yahoo Finance report does not establish that its listed offer or terms remain available.
