The ranges are not a substitute for a valuation of a specific vehicle.
Why the estimate changes from one Tesla to another
“Three-year-old Tesla” can mean materially different vehicles. The cited Model 3 and Model Y examples differ, and a specific car’s trim, options, mileage, condition, and location can all affect its estimate. The valuation provider and sale channel matter too: trade-in estimates are not the same as private-party or resale estimates.

The examples show the channel difference directly: each provider’s cited private-party or resale estimate is higher than its trade-in estimate. That does not guarantee an individual owner will receive either figure. These pages provide estimates, not confirmed transaction prices or an appraisal tied to a particular VIN.
How to get a useful value for your Tesla
- Identify the exact model year, model, trim, and options. Do not use a Model 3 estimate for a Model Y or assume different trims are equivalent.
- Enter the vehicle’s actual mileage and condition in a valuation tool such as Edmunds’ 2023 Model 3 appraisal page, Edmunds’ 2023 Model Y appraisal page, or Kelley Blue Book’s 2023 Model Y page.
- Choose the value that matches your likely transaction: trade-in if you are trading the car, or private-party/resale if you expect to sell directly. These are different estimates, not interchangeable labels for one price.
- Compare more than one provider and obtain a vehicle-specific appraisal or offer before making a buying or selling decision. The estimates cited here vary by provider and cannot establish guaranteed proceeds for your car.
What the three-year depreciation figure means
Kelley Blue Book reports that its 2023 Model Y estimate reflects depreciation of $20,911, or 41%, over three years. This is KBB’s estimate for that Model Y, not a depreciation rate that applies to every Tesla, trim, location, or owner. The Edmunds figures above are current value estimates under their stated example assumptions; they are not a matching three-year depreciation calculation.
