IKEA’s second-hand marketplace connects people buying and selling used IKEA products; it is a peer-to-peer service, not a store inventory or a global Craigslist replacement. Ingka Group announced five markets in January 2026: Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland and Sweden. Availability, eligible items, fees and payment options depend on local rules.
What is IKEA’s second-hand marketplace?
It is an online marketplace for people to list and buy pre-owned IKEA goods. Buyers and sellers make the transaction with each other under the local marketplace terms; IKEA’s role and protections vary by country. The service began as IKEA Preowned, a trial in Madrid and Oslo announced by Ingka Group on 27 August 2024. The pilot was planned to run through December 2024 while Ingka evaluated customer interest and next steps. In January 2026, Ingka announced the Swedish launch and described the marketplace as active in five countries: Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland and Sweden. That is the announced footprint, not a guarantee that every market remains available or that the service operates worldwide. Check IKEA’s local site for current access and terms. Where can you buy second-hand furniture from IKEA?
There are two distinct routes, and the right one depends on what is available in your country:

- This furniture must be secured to the wall with the safety device provided to help prevent it from tipping over if a child climbs or hangs on it. Different wall materials require different types of fasteners. Use fasteners suitable for the walls in your home.
- Care instructions Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Wipe dry with a clean cloth. Stains can be removed by using an eraser, fine sandpaper, soap, dishwashing detergent or paint thinner.

- Peer-to-peer marketplace: Browse listings from other people in participating markets. The January 2026 announcement named Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland and Sweden; listings, protections and fees are governed by the relevant local terms.
- IKEA store resale: In the United States, IKEA separately offers second-hand goods online and items through store As-Is sections. As-Is stock that passes inspection may include returns and buybacks, showroom or demo products, new old stock and discontinued items. IKEA says stock changes daily. Peer-to-peer listings are not the same as IKEA-owned store stock: the seller, transaction and available inventory differ. The US resale information applies to the US, not to the marketplace’s five announced European countries.
Can you sell your used IKEA furniture?
If the marketplace is operating in your country, check its local eligibility and seller requirements before preparing a listing. The process Ingka described allows a seller to scan an IKEA product and receive product photos, dimensions, a description, assembly guides, care instructions and a price recommendation. Those tools can make a listing easier to assemble, but a recommendation is not a guarantee that an item will sell at that price. Ingka’s description of the marketplace tools.

Local requirements can be specific. For example, Belgium’s marketplace terms require IKEA Family membership, at least two photos and information about the product’s condition. What can you sell on IKEA’s marketplace?
The marketplace is for used IKEA goods, but excluded categories and condition standards vary by country. Belgium’s terms cover second-hand furniture and home-furnishing accessories, but exclude IKEA Food, appliances and mattresses. Portugal’s marketplace information also excludes mattresses, food and kitchen appliances, and says modified or combined products are not allowed. Confirm the current rules in your local marketplace before listing an item.

Ingka said demand in live markets included bedroom furniture, storage and living-room seating. That is a company-reported observation about demand, not a published count of completed sales or a promise that a particular item will sell.
How do buying, payment and protection work?
Buyers generally browse listings and arrange pickup with the seller, but payment and protection arrangements depend on the local service. Portugal’s marketplace page says buyers can browse and reserve goods, then arrange pickup. It describes purchase protection as free until 1 January 2027 and otherwise usually 5% of the purchase price; check the page for the current offer and terms. Belgium takes a different approach: buyers and sellers contract directly with each other, rather than with IKEA Retail or the marketplace operator, and its terms specify a 5% buyer-protection fee. Its fees and contractual arrangements should not be assumed to apply in Portugal or elsewhere. Belgium marketplace terms.
Before committing to a listing, read the local terms for the exact fee, payment method, pickup arrangements, cancellation or dispute process, and what protection covers. A buyer-protection fee is not the same thing as IKEA guaranteeing an item’s condition or acting as the seller.

Is IKEA’s marketplace a Craigslist alternative?
It shares a basic feature with classifieds services—people list goods for other people to buy—but the available information does not establish a like-for-like comparison with Craigslist. IKEA’s marketplace is brand-specific and operates only in announced markets, with local rules for categories, membership, fees and transactions. A meaningful comparison would also need to examine each service’s geographic reach, seller requirements, protections, payment and pickup logistics, and listing tools. The evidence here does not establish that IKEA outperforms or replaces Craigslist.
Why is IKEA expanding second-hand sales?
Ingka frames the marketplace as a way to make IKEA products more affordable and extend their useful lives. Kirsten Andersson, Managing Director for Platform & Marketplaces at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), said the Swedish launch was intended to unlock a more affordable IKEA range while making it easier for customers to prolong the life of their items.
Ingka’s January 2026 announcement set a target of 170,000 marketplace listings for 2026; that is an ambition, not a reported achieved total. The same announcement attributed around 9% of Europe’s second-hand market and 4% globally to IKEA products, without explaining the measurement in the cited passage. It also reported a projection that the global second-hand furniture market would grow 7% annually and reach USD 43 billion by 2030. Those are company-reported figures and projections, not independent measurements presented here.
In its August 2024 pilot announcement, Ingka instead said IKEA products represented 10% of the second-hand home-furnishing market and projected 6.4% annual growth in 2024. These earlier figures use different dates and wording from the 2026 estimates, so they should not be read as a single comparable trend series. Ingka’s 2024 announcement; Ingka’s 2026 announcement.
