In the United States, many check deposits are available by the next or second business day, but that is not a guaranteed date for every deposit. The check type and amount, how and when you deposit it, your account history, and any permitted hold can change the schedule. Count business days—not calendar days—and use your bank’s deposit confirmation and hold notice to find the date for your specific deposit.
What “available,” “cleared” and “paid” mean
Funds availability is when your bank must let you withdraw or use deposited money under the applicable schedule. It is not a guarantee that the check can never later be returned unpaid. The schedules below explain access to funds; they do not establish whether a particular check will ultimately be paid.
How the ordinary check schedule works
For many checks, the general federal schedule makes the first $275 available at the start of the next business day after the banking day of deposit, with the remainder generally available on the second business day. This is a general rule, not a promise for every check: check type, deposit channel, cut-off time and exceptions can change it. See the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s funds-availability guidance.
The $275 figure is the current inflation-adjusted federal threshold effective July 1, 2025. It does not mean every deposited check is fully available the next day. The threshold is subject to adjustment on a five-year cycle; check the effective date when relying on it. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Regulation CC threshold notice explains the adjustment.

Which deposits may be available sooner
CFPB guidance says the following generally must be available by the next business day when deposited in person, where specified:
- Cash deposited in person.
- Checks for $225 or less deposited in person.
- Certain government checks and cashier’s or certified checks deposited in person or at the institution’s own ATM.
- A personal check drawn on the same institution, deposited in person.
- Electronic payments.
These categories and conditions matter: a check that qualifies at a teller may not get the same treatment through another channel. Consult the CFPB’s consumer guidance and your bank’s account terms.

Count business days and check the cut-off
Regulation CC schedules count business days, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays. A bank may treat a deposit made after its cut-off as received on the next business day. The CFPB says cut-offs may be no earlier than 2 p.m. at physical locations and noon at an ATM or elsewhere; your institution’s posted cut-off determines the effective date for your deposit.
For example, the Federal Reserve illustrates a $400 local check deposited with a teller on Monday: $275 is available Tuesday and the remaining $125 Wednesday. If that Monday deposit is after a 2 p.m. cut-off, it is treated as a Tuesday deposit in the example, moving availability to Wednesday and Thursday. Saturday does not count as a business day in the example even if the institution is open for some activity. See the Federal Reserve’s schedule examples.

How the deposit method changes the timeline
The same check can have a different schedule depending on where and how it is deposited. A certified check given to a teller may qualify for next-day treatment, while one deposited at the institution’s own ATM may receive staged availability. A nonproprietary ATM can have a later deadline: in a Federal Reserve example, funds must be available by the following Monday, the fifth business day, and the next-day minimum does not apply.
Mobile deposits may follow a distinct bank policy. Federal guidance does not establish one universal mobile-deposit timetable, so check your account agreement and the deposit confirmation rather than assuming the in-person schedule applies.

When a bank may extend a hold
Some circumstances permit a bank to extend the ordinary schedule. An exception is not automatic in every case; whether it applies depends on the deposit and account circumstances.
Large deposits
The current large-deposit threshold is $6,725, effective July 1, 2025. If checks deposited on a banking day aggregate above that amount, the bank may extend availability for the amount over the threshold. OCC guidance says a reasonable extension for most checks can be up to five additional business days; a longer period may be allowed when the institution can establish that it is reasonable. The $6,725 figure is an adjusted threshold, not a limit on how much you may deposit.

New accounts
OCC guidance defines a new account for these purposes as one open 30 or fewer days. A bank may use its own availability policy for ordinary checks deposited into a new account. Specified deposits are treated differently, and the amount above $6,725 from certain official checks may be held until the ninth business day. This is not a blanket nine-day rule for every deposit to a new account. Read the OCC guidance on new accounts for the distinctions.
Other exception circumstances
Permitted exceptions can also involve a redeposited check, repeated overdrafts, a bank’s doubts about a check’s collectability, or certain emergencies. If the bank extends a hold under an exception, its notice should state the reason and the expected availability date. See the OCC’s explanation of funds-availability exceptions.
How to find the date for your deposit
- Check the receipt or app confirmation. Find the effective deposit date and the bank’s cut-off; an after-cut-off deposit may count as received the next business day.
- Review any hold notice. Look for the stated reason and expected release date.
- Read the account agreement. Check the regular schedule for that check type and channel, including mobile deposits.
- Ask the bank if the date is unclear. Ask which exception, if any, applies and when the funds are scheduled to be available.
The Federal Reserve’s Guide to Regulation CC Compliance explains that its stated periods are maximum time limits: an institution may make funds available sooner and may extend availability on a case-by-case basis up to periods allowed by Regulation CC. Your bank’s schedule and notice are what resolve the timing for an individual deposit.
