There is no supported universal price winner between Sam’s Club and Costco for fresh groceries. To find the better fit, compare the same items at your local clubs on the same day, using unit prices and the shopping method you would actually use. Delivery policies differ: Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club has no item markups, while Costco says Same-Day item prices are higher than local warehouse prices.
Which is cheaper for fresh groceries?
A price comparison needs to match the item, quantity, and channel. Compare the price per pound, ounce, or count for the produce, meat, seafood, and dairy your household buys; package sizes may differ, and a lower shelf price does not necessarily mean a lower unit price.
The delivery pricing rules are not a head-to-head basket comparison. Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club item prices match its in-club, Curbside Pickup, or online prices. Costco says Same-Day item prices are higher than local warehouse prices to cover service and delivery costs. Sam’s Club lists these Delivery from Club fees and terms: for Plus members, standard delivery is free on eligible orders of $50 or more and $8 under $50; express delivery is $10; and delivery in three hours or less is $5. For Club members, standard delivery is $12, express is $22, and delivery in three hours or less is $17. These are published terms, not a guarantee of the final checkout total; availability and fees can change.

Costco Same-Day requires a $35 minimum order. Because its item prices are higher than local warehouse prices, check the live checkout total rather than comparing only the order minimum with Sam’s Club’s delivery charges.
How does fresh-grocery selection compare?
Both retailers offer fresh categories through eligible local services, but the available information does not establish a comparable national SKU count, quality ranking, package-size comparison, or in-stock rate.

Sam’s Club
Sam’s Club’s Philadelphia grocery page lists categories including produce, meat, seafood, dairy, deli, and bakery, alongside other grocery items. It describes delivery and curbside pickup for eligible products. This is an example from one local page, not a guarantee of the same assortment at every club. Costco
Costco says Same-Day customers in qualifying ZIP codes can order perishables such as organic meats, produce, and seafood. Its Same-Day page describes about 2,000 eligible grocery items, but eligibility and the actual assortment depend on ZIP code. Check Costco grocery delivery availability.

For the selection that matters to your household, compare both local catalogs on the same date and check whether the items are actually available in your preferred sizes.
What should shoppers know about weighted items and rewards?
Sam’s Club says final charges for certain meat, home meal solutions, bakery, and cheese products are based on actual weight; the online listing shows a maximum. Your final charge may therefore differ from the estimate based on the displayed maximum or expected weight. Costco’s pages cited here do not establish an equivalent policy for comparison, so do not assume its handling is the same or different without checking the listing and checkout.

Rewards also depend on the program and channel. Sam’s Club says Delivery from Club orders do not accrue Sam’s Cash. Costco says eligible Executive Membership rewards and Costco Anywhere Visa rewards apply to CostcoGrocery shopping. Check each program’s current terms before including rewards in a cost comparison. Sam’s Club delivery and pickup
Sam’s Club offers Delivery from Club through its website or app, with standard, express, same-day, and next-day options described in its FAQ. Express may arrive as soon as one hour; same-day orders should be placed by 1 p.m.; and windows depend on available slots. The FAQ describes the delivery area as generally within 15 miles of a club. For curbside pickup, Sam’s Club’s Philadelphia page describes choosing items marked for pickup, selecting a time, then checking in from the club parking area for loading. That page says Plus pickup scheduling may begin at 7 a.m. and Club scheduling at 9 a.m.; those example hours should not be treated as national hours. Philadelphia club grocery page.
Costco Same-Day delivery
Costco Same-Day is fulfilled through Instacart and is available only in qualifying ZIP codes. Customers can discuss substitutions or request refunds for unavailable items, and Costco says the customer must be present for delivery. The service has a $35 minimum order. Check local eligibility, delivery slots, and checkout details before relying on it for a particular grocery run. Costco grocery delivery information.
How to make a fair local comparison
- Build a short list. Write down the fresh groceries you buy regularly, including preferred varieties or cuts and the quantity you typically use.
- Check both local catalogs on the same day. Note whether each item is available and compare like with like; do not treat a different package size as the same deal.
- Calculate unit prices. Record the price per pound, ounce, or count, along with package weight or quantity. For Sam’s Club products priced by actual weight, account for the final-weight charge.
- Keep shopping channels separate. Compare warehouse prices with warehouse prices, or delivery with delivery. Include the applicable membership tier and any delivery or pickup charge for the channel you would use.
- Include the practical cost. Add travel or waiting time where relevant, and include rewards only if you qualify and the program applies to that purchase.
This method can reveal which nearby club is less expensive for your own basket and which service is workable for your schedule. A retailer’s delivery-pricing policy alone cannot establish which club has the lower total for your groceries.
