Check your airline’s current cabin-bag rules against the backpack’s packed dimensions, compare your laptop’s physical measurements with the maker’s sleeve specifications, and consider how the harness fits when loaded. The Osprey Farpoint 40 has documented carry-on-oriented features; the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L is another option to investigate, though its current detailed specifications should be verified with Cotopaxi.
How to choose a travel backpack for your trip
Start with the job the pack needs to do. A bag that works for a short trip with a small laptop may be a poor choice for a longer trip, a heavier tech load, or a carrier with a strict cabin-bag limit. Compare these factors before choosing:
- Airline fit: Check the operating carrier’s current size and cabin-weight rules, then compare them with the pack’s external dimensions when packed. Capacity in liters cannot guarantee that a bag will pass a sizer.
- Laptop carry: Compare your computer’s actual width, depth and thickness with the manufacturer’s compartment dimensions, if available. A diagonal screen-size claim alone does not guarantee a fit.
- Harness and loaded comfort: Look for torso adjustment, a hipbelt and a harness that can be stowed if useful. Where practical, try the pack on with a load similar to what you expect to carry.
- Organization: Consider whether you want a clamshell opening, internal dividers and quick-access pockets, or prefer a simpler layout with packing cubes.
- Capacity and empty weight: Match volume to your packing habits and trip length. If your airline weighs cabin baggage, include the empty backpack’s weight in your calculations.
- Warranty and service: Check the current terms for your region directly with the manufacturer; do not assume an old listing describes today’s coverage.
Two travel backpacks to compare
The available product information supports a direct feature check for the Farpoint 40, but is less complete for the Allpa 35L. Treat the latter’s figures below as secondary-source claims to confirm with Cotopaxi, not current manufacturer specifications.

Will a 40L or 35L backpack fit as a carry-on?
Liters describe internal volume, not the outside dimensions that an airline sizer measures. A 40L pack can be tight on a strict carrier when full, and a bag that fits one carrier’s rules may not fit another’s. The comparison measurements are useful for screening options, not as a guarantee of acceptance.
Check the current size and weight limits for the airline operating each leg of your trip, including any fare-specific rules. Compare those limits with the backpack’s external dimensions after packing; soft-sided bags can bulge beyond their listed dimensions. Osprey says the Farpoint 40 is sized for domestic carry-on requirements, but that statement does not establish that it will be accepted on every airline or international route.

How to check whether your laptop fits
Measure the laptop itself—not just its advertised screen size—and compare its width, depth and thickness with the backpack maker’s current sleeve dimensions. A sleeve described by screen diagonal may still be too tight for a particular computer, especially if it is thick or has a protective case.
For the Farpoint 40, Osprey says the direct-zip sleeve fits most laptops up to 16 inches. “Most” is not a fit guarantee: compare your device’s measurements and check the exact model listing. The comparison page’s 15-inch sleeve figure conflicts with Osprey’s current description, so it should not be treated as definitive. The Allpa’s reported 15-inch sleeve is likewise a comparison-page claim that needs confirmation with Cotopaxi.

Also consider access: a direct-zip laptop compartment may make it easier to reach a computer at security, but the relevant opening and screening procedures depend on the pack and airport. Check the bag’s layout and follow the airport’s current instructions.

Choose a layout that matches how you pack
A large front-panel opening gives access across the main compartment, while internal dividers and quick-access pockets can help keep items sorted. If a pack is less internally divided, packing cubes can organize clothing and separate items; they do not reduce the packed bag’s external dimensions enough to guarantee sizer compliance.

Assess the harness with your real load
The Farpoint 40’s adjustable torso length and stowaway harness and hipbelt are documented features. They are not independent comfort-test results, and they do not prove a universal fit. If possible, load the pack with the weight you expect to carry and check how it sits on your torso before committing to it.

What to confirm before you buy
- Find the current cabin-bag size and weight rules for each operating airline and fare on your itinerary.
- Check the backpack maker’s current regional listing for external dimensions, capacity, empty weight, laptop-compartment details and warranty terms.
- Measure your laptop’s width, depth and thickness, including any case you plan to use, and compare those measurements with the sleeve dimensions.
- Test the harness with a realistic load where practical; check torso adjustment and whether the hipbelt and stowaway features suit your use.
- Pack the bag as you would for travel, then assess its full outside shape against the airline’s limit rather than relying on liters alone.
