How to Compare MBA Programs’ Employment Reports and Salary Outcomes

MBA employment reports are comparable only when their cohorts, timing, denominators and compensation measures align. Here’s how to assess the numbers for your career and finances.

Compare MBA employment reports only after aligning the graduating cohort, measurement date, employment type, denominator and compensation definition. A reported salary or placement rate is a school-published snapshot—not a universal ranking—and figures from different cohorts or categories may not be directly comparable.

Start by aligning what each report measures

Before comparing schools, record the graduating class and the point in time when outcomes were measured. Separate full-time employment from internships, and compare the same kinds of outcomes over the same time window wherever possible.

For example, Stanford GSB’s Class of 2025 employment page describes full-time hires three months after graduation. Wharton’s 2025 Career Report presents full-time figures for the Class of 2025 and internship figures for the Class of 2026. Those are different cohorts and employment types; an internship salary should not be read as an annual full-time salary.

Check the denominator behind every employment rate

A percentage is useful only when you know who is counted. Look for the total class size, students seeking employment, students not seeking employment, survey respondents, offers and acceptances. Then note whether each rate is calculated among job seekers, respondents or all graduates.

#1 Best Overall

Wharton’s 2024 Career Report separates students seeking employment, offers, acceptances, students not seeking employment and students who did not respond. These are distinct populations or outcomes: an offer is not an acceptance, and a student not seeking a job should not silently be treated as an unsuccessful job seeker.

Stanford reports that 90% of its Class of 2025 job seekers secured offers within three months of graduation and 81% accepted an offer. Those figures describe job seekers, not necessarily the entire graduating class; preserve that denominator when using them.

Assess coverage and missing results

Response coverage helps you judge how representative a report may be, but a high response rate does not make respondents identical to the full class. Check how many people are included, who is omitted, and whether any categories are suppressed.

Wharton says compensation is not listed for categories reported by less than 1% of students seeking employment. A missing salary category therefore does not mean the salary was zero or that no one entered that field; it means the report does not publish compensation for that small category.

Compare like-for-like compensation

Match salary type and unit: annual full-time base salary with annual full-time base salary, or monthly internship pay with monthly internship pay. Check separately whether the figure includes bonuses, equity, options, carried interest or other compensation.

Wharton reports a $185,000 median annual full-time salary for its Class of 2025. Its report defines median base salary as one year only and excludes discretionary bonuses, options and carried interest in partnerships. It also reports a $10,416 median monthly internship salary for the Class of 2026. The latter is monthly internship pay for a different cohort, not a competing full-time salary figure.

Compare career paths, not just school-wide medians

An overall median can conceal substantial differences in the jobs graduates take. Compare industry and function distributions alongside the corresponding pay, and use location or work-authorization information where reports provide it. The relevant comparison depends on your intended role and geography: two programs’ overall medians may differ because their graduates enter different mixes of industries, functions or locations.

Stanford reports that 16% of its Class of 2025 pursued their own ventures. That outcome matters to a reader considering entrepreneurship, but it is not the same as accepting a conventional job offer. Keep entrepreneurial outcomes distinct from job placement when evaluating the report.

Use several years without assuming the measures stayed constant

One graduating class may reflect that year’s hiring conditions. Wharton’s archive lists historical reports from 1999 through 2024 and links its 2025 report. Multiple years can provide context, but compare trends only after checking that cohort definitions, categories and reporting methods remain consistent. A changed category or methodology can make a year-to-year difference look more meaningful—or less meaningful—than it is.

Turn the reports into a personal-finance decision

Employment and salary outcomes inform a school decision, but they do not by themselves establish return on investment. A personal calculation also needs tuition, living expenses, foregone earnings, financing costs, likely location and your own career goals. School reports describe reported outcomes; they do not provide a complete personalized ROI estimate or guarantee what an individual graduate will earn.

Build a comparison sheet with one row per program and record the cohort, measurement date, job-seeking population, offer and acceptance rates with denominators, response coverage, salary type and unit, bonus treatment, industry and function mix, location context and any definition changes. Leave a value unfilled when it is not published rather than treating a missing figure as zero.
