In the United States, airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers had a median annual wage of $232,140 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That is an occupation-wide midpoint—not a guaranteed starting salary or a pay rate for every airline, pilot role, or country.

What is the typical U.S. airline pilot salary?

The BLS May 2025 median for airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers was $232,140 a year. A median divides the reported wage distribution in half: half of workers in the category earned more and half earned less. It is not the same as an average, and it does not describe a specific employer’s pay scale.

The distribution was broad. In May 2025, the lowest 10 percent earned less than $106,710, while the highest 10 percent earned more than $463,830. These figures are for the BLS occupation category, not a breakdown by airline, aircraft, seat, or years of service. BLS wage data and occupational outlook

How does the figure compare with other pilot pay?

The occupation and industry measures answer different questions. The BLS occupation figure covers airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers across industries; industry medians describe workers in a particular sector. The separate commercial-pilot occupation is not interchangeable with airline-pilot pay.

BLS measure May 2025 median What it represents
Airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers $232,140 Occupation-wide U.S. median
Scheduled air transportation $293,240 Industry median; not the occupation-wide figure
Courier and express delivery services $334,930 Industry median, not typical scheduled-airline pay
Commercial pilots $123,220 Separate occupation category

All figures in the table are BLS May 2025 medians. An industry median and an occupation median have different scopes, so the higher number does not mean every pilot in that industry earns more than the occupation-wide median. BLS occupational wage figures

Why do airline pilot earnings vary?

Seniority and experience

BLS says airline pilots usually start as first officers and receive wage increases as they build experience and seniority. The national median does not reveal a first-year salary or provide a current captain-versus-first-officer comparison.

Employer, role, and work rules

Pay can differ with employer and seniority, among other factors. Contract rates and work rules may change, and the BLS national data do not supply current airline-by-airline rates. Use a specific employer’s current contract or hiring materials when evaluating a particular job rather than treating the national median as that employer’s offer.

What compensation comes in addition to wages?

BLS reports that airline pilots receive an expense allowance, or per diem, for each hour they are away from home; they may also receive extra pay for international flights. Pilots and their immediate family members usually are entitled to free or reduced-fare flights. The BLS wage figures do not quantify the typical annual value of these allowances or travel benefits, so they should not be added to the median as though they were a known amount. How much do pilots work to earn that pay?

BLS reports an average of 75 flight hours per month for airline pilots, plus 150 hours per month on other duties such as checking weather and preparing flight plans. Flight hours are not total work hours. Schedules vary, can include several workdays followed by days off, and may involve overnight layovers away from home. BLS work-environment information

What career and hiring context matters?

BLS says airline pilots typically need a bachelor’s degree and experience as a commercial or military pilot, but a degree or particular training route does not guarantee an airline job or a given salary. The certificate sequence it describes is student pilot, private pilot, instrument rating, commercial pilot, multi-engine rating, and airline transport pilot (ATP); actual requirements depend on FAA rules. Crews flying scheduled commercial airliners must hold ATP certificates. Civilian flight schools are FAA-certified, and newly hired airline pilots receive employer training. For the 2025–2035 period, BLS projects 8 percent employment growth for airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers. It projects about 16,400 average annual openings for airline and commercial pilots combined; many are expected to result from workers transferring occupations or leaving the labor force. These are projections, not guarantees of hiring or salary growth. BLS employment projections
