Since a 2017 profile described the startup’s early plans, the company has reported a Hartford field activation, ETL certification and the start of serial production. Those milestones do not establish whether the product is available to buy today or how it performs in independent testing.
How micro-CHP works—and where SmartWatt fits
Combined heat and power (CHP), also called cogeneration, makes electricity and useful heat at the same time. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes a CHP system as an integrated combination of a prime mover, generator, heat recovery equipment and electrical interconnection. Its value depends on using both outputs effectively, not simply on the generator’s rated electrical output. EPA’s CHP overview says a facility’s operating hours, thermal requirements, and local electricity and gas rates help determine whether a system is a technical and economic fit.
Enviro Power presents SmartWatt as a boiler replacement that captures heat for space heating and hot water while a steam-driven generator produces electricity. That approach aims to turn heating equipment into an on-site energy resource. The design description and performance claims on the company’s pages are vendor statements, not independent verification. Enviro Power’s technology page identifies its SW300-6 model and says serial production began.
Company-reported output is not a full efficiency result
Enviro Power’s homepage claims up to 6 kW of electricity and nearly 98 percent heating efficiency on a higher heating value (HHV) basis. Those figures should be treated as company claims until supported by a product datasheet and independent test report. The company homepage does not, in the material reviewed, establish test conditions or a comparable net-system efficiency that accounts for electrical parasitic loads.

What the 2017 profile said—and what changed later
IEEE Spectrum’s May 2017 profile described founder Michael Cocuzza’s prototype, based on his home hot-water boiler, and said the company was seeking financing to bring its micro-CHP product to market. That article discussed a 10-kW unit and a staged plan: light-commercial installations first, then a proposed 5-kW residential unit and eventually a 1.5-kW unit. These were plans reported in 2017, not a current roadmap. The early 10-kW concept should not be conflated with the current company-described SW300-6 or its claimed output of up to 6 kW. IEEE Spectrum’s historical profile also reported a company claim of up to 30 percent lower electricity consumption, without test conditions that would establish this as a verified savings figure.
2019: a reported Hartford field activation
On January 7, 2019, Enviro Power announced that it had activated a SmartWatt Boiler in a Fuller Brush building at a Hartford office complex. The company said it replaced existing equipment and was producing heat and electricity for 30,000 square feet of office space. This is a company-reported trial milestone and site scale; it is not an independent performance study or a measured energy-savings result. Enviro Power’s announcement gives the company’s account of the activation.

2022: certification and serial-production announcements
In 2022, Enviro Power and design partner Windings announced ETL certification under UL standards and said Burnham Holdings had launched serial production. Enviro Power CEO Dan Nadav said the company had “achieved ETL certification and have kicked off serial production of the SmartWatt Boiler,” in that dated announcement. A June 2022 press release from Senator Chris Murphy quoted Nadav saying the company was ready to start selling its solution. These announcements establish what the parties reported at the time, but do not confirm that orders are being accepted now. The 2022 certification and production release and the Senate’s June 2022 release provide the dated statements.
What a facility should compare before considering CHP
CHP technologies include different prime movers, such as reciprocating engines, turbines and fuel cells; boiler-integrated micro-CHP is not the only design. EPA recommends evaluating systems against a facility’s electrical and thermal loads and local fuel conditions. EPA’s CHP technology overview describes system types and components. Comparing nameplate electrical output alone can obscure whether a system’s heat is useful when it runs or whether its operating costs fit the site.

For SmartWatt or another candidate, ask vendors to provide comparable information on:
- Useful heat output, delivery temperature and whether the site can use that heat throughout expected operating hours.
- Gross and net electric output, including parasitic loads and the conditions under which output was measured.
- Net efficiency and the fuel basis used, with a test report and defined operating conditions.
- Expected annual run hours, fuel use, emissions and maintenance schedule.
- Capital and installation costs, utility interconnection requirements, and any islanding or backup capability.
- Warranty terms, service coverage and the availability of qualified local support.
The reviewed company pages do not establish a current purchase price, order channel, installation geography, warranty, independent efficiency test, or current competitor comparison. They also do not establish that the named manufacturing and distribution partner or design partner currently has the same commercial role described in company materials; confirm present arrangements directly before relying on them.

What is—and is not—established about the opportunity
Enviro Power has described a boiler-plus-generator design, reported a commercial field activation in 2019, and announced certification and serial production in 2022. Its current company pages identify the SW300-6 and make output and efficiency claims. Together, these are meaningful development milestones, but they are not evidence of present-day retail availability, broad deployment, long-term reliability, or independently measured savings. A facility evaluating the product needs current commercial terms and site-specific performance evidence, not a startup milestone or a headline specification alone.
