IRS Direct File was not available for Filing Season 2026, when taxpayers filed their 2025 federal returns. Treasury announced in October 2025 that the IRS would suspend the service; in November, the IRS told participating states that there was no future launch date. Free filing options remain, but eligibility, support and state-return coverage vary.

Is IRS Direct File going away?

For the 2026 filing season, yes: Direct File was suspended and was not offered. The precise status matters. Treasury announced a suspension; the IRS told participating states the service would not be available for Filing Season 2026 and that no future launch date had been set. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) later recounted the notice and said the service website had indicated it was closed. GAO’s account does not establish a permanent end date.

The change reversed the direction announced in May 2024, when Treasury and the IRS described Direct File as a permanent free option and invited all states and Washington, D.C., to participate for Filing Season 2025. Treasury’s October 2, 2025 report instead said the IRS would suspend Direct File and focus on existing free filing programs, particularly Free File. It cited high costs and limited participation among its reasons. Treasury’s report and announcement laid out proposed follow-up work, including an updated taxpayer survey, a Free Filing Modernization Summit, improved usage data from software providers and a supplemental report to Congress; those were announced actions, not proof that each has since been completed.

On November 3, 2025, the IRS emailed participating states that Direct File would not be available in Filing Season 2026 and that no future launch date had been set. The Associated Press quoted IRS official Cynthia Noe’s notice: “IRS Direct File will not be available in Filing Season 2026. No launch date has been set for the future.” The AP report also quoted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying, “It wasn’t used very much,” and that there were “better alternatives.”

Can I still use IRS Direct File?

No—not for Filing Season 2026. The IRS’s 2026 guidance on filing federal returns for tax year 2025 lists other free options, not Direct File. Availability in a later season is unsettled: the IRS notice, as reported by GAO, gave no future launch date. For current options, use the IRS’s Free File and other free filing guidance, and verify the terms that apply to your return.

What free ways can I file a 2025 federal return?

The IRS lists several routes for 2025 federal income tax returns filed during the 2026 season. They are not interchangeable: some provide guided software, some require you to prepare the return yourself, and others depend on military-community or income eligibility.

Option Who can use it What to know
IRS Free File guided software Taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less, subject to partner-specific rules For the 2026 filing season, the IRS listed eight trusted partners. A partner may add criteria such as age, state residency or military status. Some offer free state preparation and filing; check the partner’s terms rather than assuming a state return is included.
Free File Fillable Forms Available regardless of income to people comfortable preparing their own returns These are IRS forms with instructions for self-preparation, not guided interview software.
MilTax Eligible members of the military community The Department of Defense resource allows electronic filing of a federal return and up to three state returns.
VITA and TCE Qualified individuals Volunteer programs provide free basic return preparation. Check the IRS guidance for program details and eligibility.

These eligibility and service details come from the IRS’s 2026 filing guidance. The $89,000 Free File threshold applies to 2025 AGI for the 2026 season; it does not mean every taxpayer below that amount qualifies for every partner’s product. Compare partner rules and confirm whether state preparation and filing cost extra.

When free software may not be the right fit

If you want paid professional help, the IRS also points taxpayers to advice on choosing a tax professional and recognizing warning signs. A paid preparer is a separate option, not a free substitute for Direct File.

What do the Direct File usage and savings figures show?

The figures cited in the policy debate use different years and measure different things. The 2024 pilot’s users, claimed refunds, estimated fee savings and survey ratings describe its participants. Treasury’s later participation estimate uses all tax year 2024 federal individual income tax returns submitted by a specific date as its denominator. Neither set alone is a complete cost-benefit analysis.

Measure Reported figure What it describes
People who filed using Direct File 140,803 Direct File pilot users in 2024, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Refunds claimed by pilot users More than $90 million Refunds claimed by 2024 pilot users, according to Treasury.
Estimated federal preparation fees saved $5.6 million Treasury’s estimate for pilot users in 2024; it is not a measured estimate of the program’s total costs or net public savings.
Positive experience ratings 90% Respondents in a Treasury survey of more than 11,000 Direct File users rated their experience “Excellent” or “Above Average.” This is a survey of users, not a measure of all taxpayers’ preferences.
All federal individual returns submitted About 146 million Returns for tax year 2024 submitted as of August 1, 2025, according to Treasury.
Share prepared and submitted using Direct File 0.2% overall; 0.3% among filers in participating states Treasury’s estimate for tax year 2024 returns processed by August 1, 2025. The state figure has a different denominator from the overall share.

Treasury’s pilot figures and its later participation estimate answer different questions. The pilot count and savings estimate do not erase the limited share of returns attributed to Direct File in the later estimate; that share, in turn, does not measure user satisfaction or quantify the full value of the service. Treasury’s 2024 pilot announcement reported the pilot outcomes. Its 2025 report gives the later participation figures and its reasons for suspension.

What did the GAO decide about the suspension?

GAO considered a procedural question under the Congressional Review Act: whether the suspension was a rule that had to be submitted to Congress under that law. It concluded the suspension did not substantially affect taxpayers’ statutory rights or obligations. GAO expressly did not decide whether Direct File should remain available as a matter of policy. Its analysis should not be read as an endorsement or rejection of the decision to suspend the service. Read GAO’s decision.
