The least expensive new electric car in Autotrader’s 2025 U.S. ranking was the 2025 Nissan LEAF, at $29,280 including destination. That is a destination-included starting-price figure, not Nissan’s bare MSRP or the amount every buyer would pay out the door. The ranking below follows Autotrader’s order and price basis; trim-specific range figures help show what those starting prices do—and do not—tell you.

How to read the prices and ranking

Autotrader’s 2025 list ranks new EVs by each model’s base-trim manufacturer pricing, with destination charges included and taxes, title, and licensing fees excluded. Options, incentives, dealer fees, and local inventory can change the amount a buyer pays. Its figures should not be treated as transaction prices or compared directly with manufacturer MSRPs that exclude destination. Autotrader’s 2025 cheapest-EV list is the source for the order and the prices in the table.

Range figures are estimates reported for particular trims or configurations, not guaranteed real-world driving distances. Where a source gives a higher-trim maximum rather than entry-trim range, the distinction is called out.

The 10 cheapest new EVs in Autotrader’s 2025 ranking

Rank 2025 model Starting price, including destination Reported range Practical detail
1 Nissan LEAF $29,280 149 miles for S; up to 212 miles for SV PLUS Low entry price, but the least expensive S trim has the shortest stated range in this list.
2 Fiat 500e $32,495 149 miles Small, city-oriented EV. Kelley Blue Book instead labels its second-ranked Fiat a 2024 500e and lists $34,095; the model year and price here follow Autotrader.
3 Hyundai KONA Electric $34,425 200 miles for SE; up to 261 miles for SEL and Limited Autotrader’s starting figure is not the same as Hyundai’s pre-freight MSRP.
4 Chevrolet Equinox EV $34,995 Up to 319 miles for LT1 front-wheel drive Autotrader describes LT1 as a lower-priced trim introduced for model year 2025.
5 Toyota bZ4X $38,465 Up to 252 miles Toyota says a dual-voltage Level One and Level Two charging cable is standard on all grades.
6 Hyundai IONIQ 6 $39,045 240 miles for the base configuration The ranking’s sedan; consider its body style alongside range and price.
7 Ford Mustang Mach-E $39,090 Up to 320 miles Kelley Blue Book lists a different base price, $38,490, and 250 miles of base range; its figures use a different source and definition.
8 Subaru Solterra $39,915 227 miles Autotrader reports 227 miles in its most capable configuration and standard all-wheel drive.
9 Kia Niro EV $40,995 253 miles Hatchback/crossover body style.
10 Nissan Ariya $41,160 216 miles for Engage; up to 289 miles in higher-priced configurations Higher-priced versions also offer all-wheel drive.

All prices and range descriptions in this table follow Autotrader unless a different source is expressly identified. Kelley Blue Book’s prices exclude incentives, rebates, and other discounts. See its 2025 cheapest-electric-car list for the alternative Fiat and Mustang Mach-E figures.

Why the LEAF’s listed price differs from Nissan’s MSRP

Nissan’s June 11, 2024 announcement set the 2025 LEAF S MSRP at $28,140 and listed $1,140 for destination and handling separately. Added together, those figures equal Autotrader’s $29,280 starting price. Nissan wrote: “The 2025 Nissan LEAF is now on-sale with a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $28,140.” Nissan also says dealer prices are set by dealers; its MSRP excludes taxes, title, license, and destination. Neither the MSRP nor Autotrader’s destination-included figure is an out-the-door quote.

Nissan listed the SV PLUS at $36,190 before the same separately listed destination and handling charge, with estimated range up to 212 miles, compared with 149 miles for the S. Those manufacturer figures explain why the cheapest trim and the longest-range LEAF are not the same purchase. Nissan’s 2025 LEAF information provides the trim pricing and range details.

What the price-to-range comparison reveals

The lowest sticker is not automatically the lowest-cost fit for a particular driver. In Autotrader’s list, the LEAF S starts at $29,280 with 149 miles of stated range; the KONA Electric SE is listed at $34,425 with 200 miles; and the Equinox EV LT1 is listed at $34,995 with up to 319 miles. These are not perfectly interchangeable comparisons: range depends on trim and configuration, and the price reflects the source’s destination-included basis.

  • For the lowest listed starting price: the LEAF ranks first, but consider whether the S trim’s stated range fits your regular trips.
  • For more stated range near the bottom of the ranking: compare the Equinox EV LT1 and KONA Electric SE, while checking the exact trim, drivetrain, and local quote.
  • For body style and passenger or cargo needs: compare the IONIQ 6 sedan with the hatchback, crossover, and SUV-shaped choices rather than choosing on price alone.
  • For traction: confirm whether the specific configuration is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Autotrader identifies standard all-wheel drive for the Solterra and higher-priced all-wheel-drive Ariya configurations.

Manufacturer prices can use a different basis

Two examples show why identical-looking “starting prices” are not necessarily like-for-like. Hyundai’s official 2025 KONA Electric page lists the SE at $32,975 before freight, tax, title, and license, while Autotrader lists $34,425 including destination. Hyundai’s trim prices are $36,975 for SEL, $38,375 for N Line, and $41,150 for Limited. Hyundai estimates 200 miles for SE, 230 for N Line, and 261 for SEL and Limited. These manufacturer figures are useful for understanding trims, but they should not be substituted for Autotrader’s ranked price. Hyundai’s 2025 KONA Electric specifications list the MSRPs and ranges.

Toyota’s December 17, 2024 announcement gives 2025 bZ4X XLE MSRP as $37,070 for front-wheel drive and $39,150 for all-wheel drive, while Autotrader’s list shows a $38,465 starting price. The source figures therefore reflect different price presentations; they are not evidence of a precise dealer-price difference. Toyota also says the dual-voltage charging cable for Level One and Level Two is standard across grades. Toyota’s 2025 bZ4X announcement has those manufacturer details.

What to check before choosing one

  1. Compare the exact trim. Confirm the listed starting trim’s range, drivetrain, and included equipment; a model’s maximum range may belong to a more expensive configuration.
  2. Get a current, itemized dealer quote. Ask which destination charge, options, dealer fees, taxes, title, and registration are included. Keep MSRP, destination-included price, and out-the-door total separate.
  3. Check incentives and local stock. Incentives and available vehicles vary by time and location. Kelley Blue Book says its listed prices exclude incentives, rebates, and other discounts, and Autotrader notes that options and incentives affect final cost.
  4. Plan charging around your home and routine. Toyota specifically includes a dual-voltage cable with the 2025 bZ4X. For other models, verify included charging equipment, connector compatibility, your electrical capacity, and any installation requirements before budgeting for home charging.

This is a historical ranking of 2025-model-year vehicles, not proof that every vehicle remains available new in October 2026. A reviewed 2025 guide dates its vehicle sample to February 2025 and says availability varies by state. Check current dealer listings and pricing where you live before treating any model as purchasable new.
