How to Plan a Trip to Paris on a Budget: A Practical Cost Guide

A practical Paris budget starts with your exact lodging dates, then weighs sightseeing and transit against your itinerary. Here are attributed estimates and current fare details.

You can plan a Paris trip around a daily spending target, but there is no single official all-in budget: your dates, lodging, flights, party size and itinerary determine the total. Start by comparing accommodation for your exact dates, then choose paid sights, and only then decide whether a transit pass fits your journeys. The available figures below are published estimates and current fare information—not a quote from a local resident.

Start with a budget that matches your travel style

ParisTourism.org’s August 2026 guide estimates daily spending, excluding flights, at €60–€90 per person for shoestring travel, €120–€180 for a comfortable trip, and €200–€300 for mid-range spending. The guide suggests €100–€150 as a comfortable target. These are that publisher’s estimates, not an official Paris-wide visitor average; the site also discloses advertising and booking links monetized through Travelpayouts.

Use the ranges as a starting point rather than a promise. Build your own total by separating lodging from meals, local transport, admissions and airfare. This makes it easier to see whether a higher-cost hotel is pushing the trip over budget, or whether paid activities are the larger factor.

Read ParisTourism.org’s Paris-on-a-budget guide for the publisher’s estimate details.

Choose dates by comparing real lodging prices

ParisTourism.org says January, February and November tend to be cheaper for accommodation, while March–May and September–October can offer a balance of conditions and cost. It estimates that June–August and the Christmas season may be 30–50% above low season. That is a secondary publisher’s claim, not a verified hotel price index, so do not apply the percentage mechanically to your own trip.

Search the same number of nights and comparable accommodation for several date windows. Compare the full lodging total, including taxes or fees shown at checkout, rather than relying on a seasonal label. Also account for any flight-price difference and whether a cheaper room is far enough from your planned activities to increase transit needs.

Choose paid sights before buying a pass

Mixing free visits with a few paid attractions is often the clearest way to control sightseeing costs. The official Paris je t’aime tourist office has a free museums and monuments guide and lists museum and exhibition tickets from €9. Those are dynamic listings, so check current availability and prices before you plan around them.

The tourist office also advertises a city pass from €65. A June 2025 pass PDF listed tiers of €65 for three attractions, €115 for five and €185 for six, but those older figures should not be treated as current terms without checking the latest offer. Compare any pass’s current price with the individual admission prices of the places you genuinely intend to visit; a pass is poor value if it encourages you to add attractions you would otherwise skip.

See the June 2025 official pass attraction list, then confirm present pricing and conditions on the tourist office site.

Check whether Paris Visite fits your transit plan

Île-de-France Mobilités lists Paris Visite fares effective 1 January 2026. The pass provides unlimited regional transit across zones 1–5, including airport travel and named destinations such as Versailles and Disneyland Paris. The fare schedule is:

Pass duration Price
1 day €30.60
2 days €45.40
3 days €63.80
5 days €78

Paris Visite is useful when you value unlimited travel and want regional or airport coverage in one product, but the published fares do not establish that it is the cheapest choice for every visitor. Compare the pass with current separate-ticket options based on your arrival airport, number of travel days, expected trips and out-of-central-Paris destinations. The pass period covers consecutive days, so check its terms against your actual calendar.

Fare details are available from Île-de-France Mobilités; RATP also describes the Paris Visite pass.

Assemble the total around your own trip

Once you have dates and a lodging quote, make a simple per-person estimate for the full stay. Keep fixed costs and choices distinct so you can adjust one without rebuilding the plan:

  • Accommodation: use the total for the exact dates and room type you would book.
  • Food: set a daily amount that reflects how often you expect to eat out versus buy groceries or takeaway.
  • Transport: price the pass or individual fares against the journeys you expect, including airport and regional trips.
  • Sightseeing: list the paid attractions you will actually visit, then check whether a current pass costs less than those admissions combined.
  • Flights and other trip costs: add these separately, because the published daily spending bands above exclude flights.

There is no substantiated local-resident quote or official all-in Paris budget in the sources cited here. A realistic trip total therefore comes from your actual dates, accommodation, travel needs and chosen activities—not from treating a daily range as a universal price.
